AFL 2024: Relive updates, SuperCoach scores from Super Saturday, round 19

SuperCoach stars rise, Pies fall as Super Saturday scalps shape the race to the finals.

Zak Butters may have been fired-up in Adelaide, but his SuperCoach score crashed and burned when it mattered most.

11.3% of coaches captained the young star - with the number increasing to 40% when considering the top 1% of SuperCoaches.

He has recorded scores of 158 and 175 in his last visits with the Tigers - who just so happen to concede the most points to midfielders - yet failed to deliver tonight.

Nevertheless, Port Adelaide claimed victory over Richmond whilst Geelong found themselves stuck in the mud against a triumphant Dogs outfit.

A blockbuster Saturday twilight clash between Hawthorn and Collingwood saw the former take yet another scalp, continuing their late season surge towards finals as Ginnivan put his ex-teammates to the sword.

Earlier, GWS and St Kilda cruised to convincing wins over Gold Coast and West Coast respectively.

The Suns had a horrid day in front of goal as their winless stretch away from home continued.

Relive all the updates and our SuperCoach analysis below.

THE THREE TAKEAWAYS

ROWELL DISASTER

If you thought Matt Rowell’s SuperCoach plummet couldn’t get any worse, you were sorely mistaken. Fantasy Freako pointed out pre-game that Rowell only averaged 16.3 disposals against the Giants, the lowest of any AFL side. It proved to be an ominous warning of what was to come as he slumped to just 51 points. It was his lowest score of the season and sixth consecutive score of 82 or less. A far cry from Rowell’s first seven rounds where he only scored below 126 points once. There was talk pre-game of coaches benching Rowell to loop in Billy Dowling’s score of 83, and those that did so were vindicated. His price has already plummeted to $452,500, and will be set to plummet further given his breakeven was 118. For the 36,000 coaches that still own him, it’s simply a disaster.

RUCK RACE WIDE OPEN

Set and forget used to be engrained in a SuperCoaches ruck mindset, but that seemed to leave the minds of many this year.

Chasing value led coaches to the likes of Jordon Sweet, Ned Moyle and Lloyd Meek while Tom De Koning and Toby Nankervis lurked as juicy POD options. Max Gawn’s recent foot injury was the fuel in the fire for many, prompting crazy moves for those who still had trades to spare - but has it been worth it?

At this stage of Round 19, the race for ruck glory remains wide open.

Off the back of an 85 last week, Tim English was back to his best with 139 points, while Darcy Cameron was impressive in the absence of Mason Cox. He boasts a three-round average of 101.

Before succumbing to a back injury, Nankervis was far from flying, but a five-round average of 132.4 tells a bigger story.

123 points for Rowan Marshall put him back in the conversation too, with the rucks shaping up to be make-or-break players in the run home.

Gawn are the days of set and forget - but if that’s what you’ve done, you’ll be ahead on trades. Will you miss out on vital points, though? Any ruck can fire on any given day at the moment, and it may just prove to be the difference.

CAPTAIN OBVIOUS?

Zak Butters appeared the obvious captain choice this week. All numbers pointed to him - but does this prove that sometimes the obvious captain isn’t the right one?

English didn’t scream ‘captain me’ after some inconsistency this year, but Geelong concede the second-most points to rucks.

Selecting the right captain could - just like ruck options - change the trajectory of your run home, so it can be worth digging a little deeper than just considering who is in hot form.

Butters came as a surprise, but maybe it was a case of overthinking.

It could be time to go back to old methods once more in the run home - could we possibly revert to selecting the same captain, week in, week out? Bontempelli, Neale and even Flanders come to mind as fail-safe options to minimise the risk of an 80 as your double score in the final weeks.

- Chloe Williams

FT SuperCoach Scores:

Burgoyne and Evans made a late charge to break the ton, accompanying Dixon who slotted four goals.

Rozee was back to his brilliant best despite exiting the field late with a hip complaint.

He said post game he would be good to go for next week’s clash with Carlton.

Butters (89) failed to fire with an efficiency of only 57% from 28 disposals.

A late out last week, Treloar rose to kick three goals to accompany his 31 disposals.

Despite this, Bontempelli - the most popular captain this week - was still able to fire, while Richards’ midfield move continues to pay dividends for the 4% of coaches who own him.

De Koning continues to stake his claim as a POD selection for the run home, while Holmes (71) was disappointing.

Humphries started hot, but finished on only 61 points.

Owners of Stewart will rejoice as he once again proved that his new-look role is the key to SuperCoach success.

10.10PM: DOGS FLY, ROOKIE FIRES

A clinical last quarter from the Bulldogs has seen them near a 50-point lead, with popular picks Bontempelli (119) and English (139) key players in the action.

In Adelaide, rookie Evans has broken the ton in his fifth game with 20 kicks, nine marks and a goal.

Yes, he’s trapped on my bench. No, I’m not okay.

10.00PM: SUBS MADE

In Geelong, Jack Macrae enters the contest, replacing Ryley Sanders.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has once again recorded four majors - sitting on 86 points.

Five Dogs have broken the ton, while Stewart has 113 points to lead for the Cats - he is well and truly back.

Charlie Dixon has also kicked four in Adelaide, but unfortunately, neither of these key forwards are worth a look for SuperCoach.

9.50PM: CARNAGE RETURNS

We thought it was over ... Connor Rozee has gone down to the rooms with a hip complaint.

He has just re-emerged, but could be a watch for next week’s top of the table clash with Carlton.

9.45PM: SUBS ACTIVATED

In Adelaide, Ollie Lord has been subbed out of the game, replaced by Quinton Narkle.

Richmond skipper Toby Nankervis also exits with a back concern, replaced by Tyler Sonsie.

In only 3% of teams, he sits on 52 points.

Unfortunately, I am part of that 3% ...

Rough.

3QT SuperCoach Analysis:

In a relatively low scoring SuperCoach affair, Rioli is the first to break the ton.

Rozee sits on 86 while Butters has only 64 points heading into the final term.

3QT SuperCoach Analysis: Geelong v Western Bulldogs

The Dogs are flying SuperCoach wise, while Dangerfield continues to push on for the Cats.

English (106) is one to note off the back of a disappointing 85-point performance last week.

He’s in 29% of teams.

9.17PM: TWO IN A ROW
For the Tigers - are they breaking through the arm wrestle?

A classy major from Mansell on the back of a measured Steely Green goal has the Tigers within two points.

The former has risen to 66 points, while Butters still sits on only 36 with an efficiency of 47%.

In Geelong, the rain has subsides - but the mud remains.

Naughton flys for his first of the day, while Richards has broken the ton.

9.30PM: RICHARDS ROLLS ON

Having already broken the ton, Richards adds yet another goal to his tally.

Owned by only 4,331, he’s an important POD consideration leading into the run home.

His scoring has dropped as of late, with recent scores of 86 and 63, but his ceiling has blown out to 163 during the year.

9.11PM: END TO END

The contest remains tight at Adelaide Oval, with each goal seeing a quick reply.

As a result, players of all positions are scoring well - for both teams, the top three scorers include one defender, one midfielder and one mid/fwd.

9.07PM: ACCURACY HOUR

Geelong’s accuracy has kept it in the contest, with it’s 4.3 (27) compared to the Bulldogs’ 4.12 (36) proving vital.

A free kick and goal to Stewart is bound to excite the 22% of coaches who own him - just as I wrote that he sat on only 49 points, he has risen to 70.

Wow!

HT SuperCoach Analysis:

Where is Zak Butters?

SuperCoaches were hoping he could capitalise against the Tigers, who concede the most points to midfielders, but he sits on only 27 at the main break.

On the other hand, Rozee has been impressive, rewarding those who claimed him at a lower price point, but has failed to lay a tackle.

Rioli leads all comers with one goal and 21 disposals and three tackles.

Dion Prestia looks set to back up last week’s 95 point outing, while Nankervis remains on only 31.

Rookie Logan Evans has nearly surpassed his average of 69.3 already after recording an early goal.

There is plenty of action to come at Adelaide oval as the game remains well and truly in the balance.

In Geelong, the Cats have fought back, but the Dogs continue to win the territory battle.

Mannagh has recorded five clearances, while Richards’ classy goal has increased his SuperCoach output.

Treloar had a huge second term to rise by a whopping 54 points.

Tom Stewart sits on 49, while Humphries has slowed to 29.

The Bulldogs will rue missed opportunities, taking only a 19-point lead into the second half despite recording nine more scoring opportunities.

8.30PM: FUTURE TIGERS RISE

There’s plenty of talk already about the best SuperCoach picks for 2025 - so don’t count out these Tigers.

Mansell, Seth Campbell and Sam Banks will be a huge part of Richmond’s future, and sit on 47, 44 and 42 points respectively as the second term winds to a close.

Can any of these young stars break the ton?

8.32PM: TERRITORIAL DOGS

The Bulldogs are leading the inside 50s 11-3, but it is Geelong that has responded with two goals of it’s own.

Zach Guthrie (76) and Ed Richards (65) lead the way, with no evident tags on display.

8.27PM: SCORES LEVEL IN ADELAIDE

An enthralling contest is ensuing in at Adelaide Oval, with a plucky Tigers side continually providing answers as the scoreline seesaws.

Currently, it’s all squared up and Power skipper Connor Rozee (61) has been at the centre of it all.

Getting to as low as $410k, he now sits at $536k and is projected to rise by $28.8k at the conclusion of the round - what a steal!

QT SuperCoach Analysis:

POD ruck option Toby Nankervis (19) and Butters (20) have started slow at Adelaide Oval, but it’s veteran Boak who leads the way at the main break.

Connor Rozee is another winner in the first term with nine disposals and a goal, but it has been all Richmond early as they lead the inside 50s by four.

Hopper (31) and Prestia (30) are shining in Tim Taranto’s absence, while Mansell ($325,400) has been lively.

QT SuperCoach Analysis: Port Adelaide v Richmond
QT SuperCoach Analysis: Port Adelaide v Richmond

In Geelong, the Cats have failed to score a major.

English is well on his way to redemption, while Duncan is leading the pack as a potential point of difference option alongside Sam De Koning.

Humphries (30) was traded in by 7% of coaches this week and for good reason, while benchwarmer Shaun Mannagh is proving his worth in the run home.

Adam Treloar (19) is finding his feet after missing last week’s match against the Blues.

QT SuperCoach Analysis: Geelong v Western Bulldogs

8.00PM: POD POTENTIAL

Have extra trades? Lucky you!

Mitch Duncan might be worth considering at a cheaper price of $511,900 compared to other premium options.

He’s scored well since Dangerfield has returned, with scores of 119, 128 and 99 in the last three rounds.

Currently, he leads the way for Geelong with 47 points as the first quarter comes to a close.

It comes as his side record a goalless quarter ... even though it wasn’t their coach who was left slightly impaired ...

7.55PM: TOO LATE?

Nick Coffield (DEF, $149,200) was a popular rookie selection early - but after falling victim to injury on multiple occasions this season, most coaches parted ways with him early.

Despite this, he remains in 25,677 teams - could he be an asset for the run home?

He currently sits second for the Bulldogs on 27 points.

7.54PM: CAPTAIN WATCH

11.2% of coaches captained Butters, while 17.4% have backed in Bontempelli.

So far, neither have caught fire - but it’s not panic stations yet, as both players have recorded high-scoring quarters time and time again.

Hopefully both games remain close for optimum scaling potential.

7.51PM: ROOKIES FLY

Some SuperCoach favourites are off to a hot start at GMHBA Stadium, with Lawson Humphries (28% owned) and Joel Freijah (18% owned) are sitting on 12 and 17 points respectively with six minutes to play in the first term.

FT: HAWKS-PIES SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

What a dominant performance from the Hawks who surged to a crushing 56-point victory as Collingwood sunk to a fourth-straight defeat. The reigning premiers are now a serious chance of missing the finals.

Turning to SuperCoach, Jack Ginnivan topped the scoring in his stellar showing with 136 points.

Of the high ownership players, Nick Daicos was okay with 106 points, while Massimo D’Ambrosio notched the same score for his best score in four weeks.

Hawks forward Dylan Moore had a superb second half - as so many Hawks did - to turn around his slow start and shoot to 108 points.

James Sicily was immense in defence, stringing together his fourth ton on the trot with 122 points from his 30-disposal game.

Looking at the Pies cheapies, Joe Richards scored 51, while Lachlan Sullivan scored just 34 after he started as the sub and came on in the second quarter.

7:16pm: NEWCOMBE SOARS

The goals just keep coming, what a superb day for the Hawks.

Just a minute earlier Luke Breust snuck out the back for his fourth goal, before Jai Newcombe got a sit on Darcy Cameron and plucked a very impressive mark before converting the set shot. Crucially given how tight the ladder is, the goal lifted the Hawks percentage above 100 for the first time all season.

NEwcombe has been very solid with 25 disposals and six clearances.

7:10pm: GINNI HAS ANOTHER

He gave the footy, he got it back, and he snapped it through to cap off an exceptional showing - if not his best ever. Jack Ginnivan has been immense.

Hawthorn now has a whopping 10-goal lead, while Jack Ginnivan has 30 disposals, two goals and 140 SuperCoach points.

6:58pm: HIGHLIGHT REEL ROLES ON

This game is going to have a serious highlight of entertaining goals.

Mabior Chol responded for Hawthorn to extend the Hawks lead back to 46 points with a brilliant goal, he balked John Noble and fended off Nick Daicos before rolling onto his left and snapping the footy through for his second goals of the term.

He could’ve made it three just a minute later but scuffed the set shot.

6:55pm: BROTHERLY LOVE

Talk about a brotherly connection. A crafty no-look Josh Daicos handball landed his brother’s lap and Nick danced his way between the Hawks defenders and dinked the footy off his boot for a goal.

The Pies continue to hang in by a thread, and trail by 40 points. It’d take a miracle comeback from here though.

6:47pm: MACDONALD RESPONDS

If anyone knows how to mount a comeback, it’s the Pies and they’d kicked the last three goals.

Fortunately for Hawthorn, Connor Macdonald responded with a timely major. He’s had a great game and it was his fourth goal.

6:45PM: HEARTWARMING GOAL

That was special. After doing his ACL in December, Dan McStay - who also missed the Pies premiership through injury - slotted a crucial goal in his return game and his teammates knew how much it meant as they came from all corners to get around him.

It’s the first goal of the third term but Collingwood now was three majors on the trot.

3QT: HAWKS-PIES SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Hawks defender James Sicily is putting together a superb game to reward the 8.6 per cent of coaches that own him with 99 points, while Jack Ginnivan continued to dazzle as he shot to 109 points.

Nick Daicos is on track for a solid score with 81 points, while Massimo D’Ambrosio seems to be improving with every quarter and also has 81 points.

Dylan Moore also had a brilliant third term, scoring 46 points to take his total to 76.

Lachlan Sullivan was largely unsighted in the third quarter, adding just three points to take his total to 14.

6:31pm: YOU COULDN’T SCRIPT IT

What a moment. What theatre.

Jack Ginnivan weaved his way through traffic and launched the ball high into the air and between the sticks for a goal. He loved it too, making a point to kiss the Hawthorn badge. Talk about rubbing salt into the wounds of his former club.

There’s still five minutes to play in the third term and Ginnivan already has a career-high 26 disposals and 108 SuperCoach points to match.

6:27pm: SUB ACTIVATED

Hawthorn has made a tactical sub given the wet with Finn Maginness injected into the game in place of Calsher Dear.

6:25pm: DE GOEY BREAKS DROUGHT

It was a long time coming but Collingwood finally has a second goal.

The ball found Jordan De Goey’s hand straight from the centre bounce and he didn’t waste his chance, booting a brilliant goal from the 50m arc.

It’s Collingwood’s first goal in over a half after Reef McInnes scored in the fourth minute of the game.

6:24pm: HAWKS PILE ON PAIN

This is unbelievable.

D’Ambrosio weaves his way through traffic and launches the Sherrin off the boot and through the sticks for his second goal. Nick Watson and Connor MacDonald also have three majors and the Hawks now lead by 57 points.

6:12pm: THE WIZARD’S MATURITY

Nick Watson had snuck out the back and was streaking towards goal in acres of space - albeit on a tight angle. He had every right to try and squeeze a banana through on the run for his third goal, but had the presence of mind the scan the field and find Massimo D’ambrosio standing all alone directly in front, and then the skill to pull the kick across his body and pick him out.

D’Ambrosio converted the subsequent set shot to extend Hawthorn’s lead to 39. If they hadn’t already, the competition better take notice of these Hawks who are closing in on that coveted September berth,

HT: HAWKS-PIES SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Jack Ginnivan. Just wow.

He has 21 disposals and six score involvements at half-time in a clash with plenty of feeling against his former side. The only blemish on Ginnivan game was a poor set shot that didn’t make the distance, but he’s been everywhere and the Pies have just allowed him to roam. He’s been rewarded with a game-high 83 SuperCoach points, shooting past his season average of 68 inside the first half.

Hawks skipper James Sicily has also battled through his shoulder injury to put together a superb first half and reward his owners with 76 points.

Nick Daicos was much-improved in the second quarter as he jumped to 59 points in pursuit of his first ton in three weeks.

Massimo D’Ambrosio also had a better second term and is on 44 points.

Hawks forward Dylan Moore is well below his best with just 31 points.

Pies rookie Joe Richards has 26 points and Lachlan Sullivan nabbed 11 points following his introduction into the game in the second quarter.

5:45pm: WASTEFUL PIES

The misses are compounding on Collingwood who showed some fight late after being dominated in the opening half. Nick Daicos had a chance on the run but sprayed it wide, before Pat Lipinski’s set shot on the cusp of the siren clattered into the post. The Pies now have 11 behinds and a lone goal heading into the break as the Hawks lead by 33.

5:36pm: SHELL-SHOCKED PIES

This is unbelievable.

The Hawks are working so hard and they’re simply everywhere. Two goals in a matter of minutes from Luke Breust and then Connor Macdonald has extended Hawthron’s lead to 34 points.

Collingwood has kicked just one goal - and eight behinds - and are looking shell-shocked.

5:30pm: SUB ACTIVATED

Nathan Kreuger has been subbed out of the clash with concussion and Lachie Sullivan is injected into the game for Collingwood as a result.

Kreuger sits in 29.1 per cent of SuperCoach teams and had just 19 points to his name, but the introduction of Sullivan is good news for the for the 12.7 per cent of coaches that still own him.

5:28pm: WATSON’S WIZARDRY

Someone tell Nick Watson it’s bucketing rain at the MCG. The man dubbed ‘the wizard’ has kicked the past two goals of the game and his second was particualrly scinitlliating.

He streamed down the boundary line before cutting back in to turn the Pies defender inside out and snapping from range.

He opted for a double-raised arms celebration as opposed to his customary ‘shush’.

5:24pm: MAYNARD’S HIGH FEND

Jack Ginnivan racked up his 15th touch of the footy courtesy of a high fend from Brayden Maynard. Maynard had attempted to block Ginnivan with his forearm but caught him in the chin, and could have an MRO case to answer for in the coming days.

Ginnivan was dazed but returned to his feet and seemed to resume play comfortably.

The rain has started tumbling down at the MCG and Hawthorn’s early 17-point lead could prove crucial.

5:17pm: THERE’S FEELING IN THIS

Jack Ginnivan was at the centre of a scuffle with a handful of Pies after he remonstrated with Pat Lipinski. There’s certainly no love lost between the Hawks forward and his former teammates.

It came as Nick Watson won a free kick and converted the set shot to extend the Hawks lead to 17 points. He and Ginnivan have been giving the Collingwood defence plenty of headaches.

5:15pm: PIES NEED A RESPONSE

Hawthorn has taken this game to Collingwood and put the Pies under the pump as they set out to snap their losing streak.

The Hawks have punished Collingwood at the stoppage with 12 stoppage clearances to three, and they also lead the inside 50s by seven.

QT: HAWKS-PIES SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Nick Daicos hasn’t scored a SuperCoach ton for the past two weeks and he hasn’t exactly made a blistering start against the Hawks with 22 points in the opening term.

Jack Ginnivan was the story of the quarter with a blistering start. He was everywhere with 11 disposals and a couple of score involvements for 44 first-quarter points against his former club.

Nathan Kreuger made a solid start for the Pies and has 18 points, while Hawthorn’s Massimo D’Ambrosio was quiet with 11.

Pies rookie Joe Richards had 21 points and popular forward Dylan Moore was below his best with 18 points.

4:55pm: POINT TO PROVE

Plenty of eyes will be on Hawks livewire Jack Ginnivan against his former club and he’s made a red-hot start. With seven minutes to play in the opening term he already has a match-high eight disposals and 36 SuperCoach points.

It comes as Connor Macdonald slotted a set shot from straight in front for Hawthorn’s third goal of the match. The Pies are under the pump and trail by 13.

4:40pm: HOT START

Hawthorn’s blockbuster clash with Collingwood is underway at the MCG, the atmosphere is electric and the pressure has been off the charts in the opening minutes.

Both sides have a goal apiece early, with James Worpel and Reef McInnes the respective goal-scorers.

A fast start will be crucial as plenty of rain is heading towards the ‘G.

FT: GIANTS-SUNS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

The Giants to a 49-point victory over an inaccurate Gold Coast at Engie Stadium.

It should come as no surprise that Sam Flanders starred. He bounced back from a slow opening half to storm to 127 points and continue his superb season.

Tom Green also impressed with 121 points to mark his first ton in three weeks.

Lachie Whitfield however led all comers with a whopping 139-point effort, rewarding the 16 per cent of coaches that own him massively.

The biggest disaster from the game however was Matt Rowell who scored just 51 points. It marks his lowest score of the season and sixth consecutive match without cracking triple figures.

Alex Sexton was also disappointing with just 60 points while Sam Clohesy scored 50.

Will Graham managed just 19 points as the sub.

Harley Reid had a solid game with 80 points, while Darcy Wilson only scored 58.

4:15pm: SUBS LOCKED IN

The final teams are in ahead of Hawthorn’s clash with Collingwood, and while there are no late changes Sam Mitchell has sprung a sub surprise, selecting the returning Finn Maginness to don the vest.

Lachlan Sullivan will start as the sub for Collingwood.

4:08pm: WATCH OUT CHARLIE

Jesse Hogan has kicked his third goal of the game to draw level with Charlie Curnow in the Coleman Medal race.

It’s game over at Engie Stadium as GWS’ lead over a wasteful Suns is extended to 46 points.

4:03pm: MORE COSTLY MISSES

Ben King has kicked 0.3 from six attempts at goal, personifying the Suns goal kicking woes against GWS. The Suns are still yet to kick a goal this half and have kicked 4.12 in a troubling outing in windy conditions at Engie Stadium.

It’s worth noting the wind hasn’t affected the Giants who have been far more accurate with 12.4.

3:56pm: IT’S A BLOODBATH

St Kilda is putting West Coast to the sword under the roof at Marvel. The Saints lead has shot to 65 points early in the third term as they crack triple figures.

Tim Membrey has kicked the three this term and has five for the game.

3:53pm: NO OLYMPICS FOR BUCKLEY

Jack Buckley has starred for the Giants down back and has 12 intercept possessions. As great as his game has been, it will likely ensure he remains a key cog for the Giants in the run home. It means his hopes of being granted leave late in the season to watch girlfriend Celeste Mucci in the 100m hurdles are all but crushed.

3QT: GIANTS-SUNS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Popular SuperCoach options Tom Green and Lachie Whitfield are enjoying very strong outings as both are within a few points of cracking the ton.

Another disaster looms for Matt Rowell owners as he has just 42 points.

3:43pm: FROM BAD TO WORSE

It had been over 40 minutes since Gold Coast’s last goal and Ben King had a relatively straight forward chance to convert after the three-quarter-time siren, but he missed narrowly to the right for Gold Coast’s 11th behind. The Suns have just four goals across three quarters and their finals hopes are hanging by a thread.

GWS leads by 28 with a quarter to play.

3QT: EAGLES-SAINTS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Jack Sinclair is playing a superb game and leads all-comers at Marvel Stadium with 118 in three quarters. He’s been getting better as the game goes on and cracked the half century in the third term alone.

Jack Steele is also on track for a very solid score with 93 points, likewise Rowan Marshall who has 90.

Harley Reid’s third term was his best of the match as he jumped from 26 to 66 points, and Darcy Wilson has 41 points.

3:35pm: OH NO JAMIE

Goals are at a premium when you trail by more than five goals and the Eagles blew a golden opportunity when Jamie Cripps fumbled the footy in acres of space, allowing the scrambling Suns defence to close in on him. West Coast would love to have that chance again.

3:33pm: SAINTS ACTIVATE SUB

Liam Henry has been subbed out of the game for St Kilda with a suspected knee injury, appearing on the interchange with crutches soon after the sub was made. It means Hugo Garcia is injected into the clash for his first game since round 10.

3:30pm: WOOD GOES BANG

Mason Wood has unleashed a thumping kick from well beyond the 50m arc to give the Saints a goal and extend their lead to 33 points.

It was a serious highlight amid plenty of ‘almost’ moments, particularly from West Coast’s Jack Hutchinson who soared just minutes earlier but couldn’t hold on to what would’ve been a mark of the year contender.

3:25pm: WORRIED BEDFORD

Having narrowly escaped a three-week suspension at the AFL Appeals Board during the week, Toby Bedford lay an eerily similar tackle on Noah Anderson which cause his head to hit the turf - albeit with minimal force.

It was clear last week’s incident was at the fore of Bedford’s mind as sprung up to plead his innocence with both arms in the air and apologised to Anderson at the next stoppage.

3:12pm: FLYIN’ RYAN - ALMOST

Liam Ryan almost completed a brilliant juggling mark early in the third term but had his pocket picked by Brad Hill as he hit the ground and was never able to fully control the footy.

HT: GIANTS-SUNS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Tom Green was somewhat blanketed in the second term with just 23 points but his match total is still 68 after a great start to the match.

Alarm bells are ringing for Matt Rowell owners however who scored just seven points in the second term and has 31 for the game.

Lachie Whitfield is on track for a great score and is scoring consistently with 62 points, while Flanders could score his first sub-100 of the season - but not by much - as he has 48 points.

HT: SAINTS-EAGLES SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Harley Reid had a quiet second term - and was denied a game-breaking run and don’t argue down the middle after he ran too far - to manage just eight SuperCoach points, taking his match total to 26.

Jack Steele continue to track well with 58 points to the half, while Jack Sinclair has a super second term to jump to 66 points.

Like Reid, Darcy Wilson has been quiet with just 27 points.

2:59pm: IS RYAN IN TROUBLE?

West Coast’s Liam Ryan could be in trouble for his bump on St Kilda’s Liam Stocker. Fortunately for Ryan, Stocker passed his concussion test.

Take a look at the incident below.

2:53pm: COSTLY MISS

The Gold Coast Suns aren’t making this any easier for themselves. They trail the Giants by 16 points at half-time after Lachie Weller sprayed a set shot chance after the siren to cut the margin back.

Gold Coast has had four more scoring shots despite the deficit, but has been wasteful with just four goals and nine behinds. Compare that to GWS who have eight goals and just the one behind.

The wasteful Suns have also 12 more inside 50s and nine more clearances. They’re far from out of this clash but need to be more clinical.

2:51pm: WHERE EAGLES MUST IMPROVE

Speaking to Sarah Jones at half-time on Fox Footy, Oscar Allen revealed where the Eagles must improve against St Kilda.

“Our contest works been pretty good and that’s been something we’ve focussed on,” Allen said.

“We’ve been lacking a little bit of connection in the front half and some silly turnovers.”

2:49pm: COSTLY FREE

St Kilda was handed their second goal on the trot to extend its lead back to 19 points after Dan Butler was caught high carelessly and aptyl converted the set shot from directly in front.

The goal came as Liam Stocker passed a concussion test for an earlier incident and returned to the interchange.

2:41pm: SUNS WITH A SNIFF

Gold Coast has kicked two goals on the trot after Jack Lukosius kicked what was his second major of the game. They have 10 scoring shots to the Giants seven off the back of a great term and trail by just seven points. Game on at Engie Stadium.

2:38pm: ONE GOAL IN IT

The Eagles are proving themselves to be no easy beats at Marvel Stadium as they dominate St Kilda in clearances and inside 50s in the second term. After three straight behinds they’ve slotted a fourth major through Jack Williams and trail by just one goal.

QT: GIANTS-SUNS SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Matt Rowell owners can breathe a very small sigh of relief. He finished the first term in a flurry to have 24 points at quarter-time, which is much nice reading than his score of -4 10 minutes into the term.

Tom Green - another midfielder who has faltered this year when it comes to SuperCoach scoring - made a blistering start with 45 points.

Giants defender Lachie Whitfield has made a promising start with 31 points.

QT: SAINTS-EAGLES SUPERCOACH ANALYSIS

Underperforming midfield gun Jack Steele has made a dominant start against the Eagles with 30 SuperCoach points in the first quarter. His owner will have their fingers crossed that he can maintain that scoring rate.

Popular cash cow Harley Reid has 18 points while Darcy Wilson has 14 points.

Saints ruck Rowan Marshall has been strong 34 points, as has Jack Sinclair with 29.

2:13pm: COLEMAN PURSUIT

GWS has responded to Jack Lukosius’ goal and the Giants lead is back out to 15 points. Jesse Hogan was the goal-scorer and it tacks his season tally to 47. He’s right in the thick of the hunt for the Coleman Medal and trails Charlie Curnow by just two goals.

2:07pm: EAGLES SURGE

Oscar Allen has threaded the needle with a beautiful set shot from the pocket. West Coast have found its feet at Marvel Stadium, the Eagles now have two goals on the trot and trail St Kilda by just nine points.

2:06pm: SUNS STRUGGLING

If the away clash against North Melbourne was do-or-die for the Suns finals hopes, they’re staring down the barrel of the executioner’s gun at Engie Stadium. Gold Coast is only a game out of the eight but is yet to win an away game this season. They’ve made a slow start against the Giants who have kicked four goals and lead by 15 points.

True to form, a clinical GWS outfit has done the damage with just nine inside 50s - four less than the Suns.

1:59pm: ROWELL’S NIGHTMARE START

20 per cent of SuperCoach eyes are firmly fixed on Matt Rowell, and his start has been poor. With 10 minutes to play in the opening term he’s on -4 points as he looks to improve on his five-round average of just 77.

To make matters worse, Rowell averages just 16.3 disposals against the Giants.

1:50pm: FIRST GOALS

The opening goal has been kicked almost simultaneously in both clashes.

Jack Higgins powered St Kilda to an ealy eight-point lead over the Eagles while Brent Daniels nailed a major for GWS against the Suns.

1:45pm: WE’RE UNDERWAY

The ball has been bounced at both Engie Stadium and Marvel Stadium for the respective GWS vs Gold Coast and St Kilda vs West Coast clashes.

If nothing else, can the AFL at least think about the poor bloggers that have to watch two games at once when scheduling these games?

1:25pm: MRO FRUSTRATION

GWS tagger Toby Bedford is free to play against the Suns this week after his three-match ban for his Tim Taranto tackle was overturned by the AFL Appeals board.

In a since deleted episode of the ‘In The Green Room’ podcast, Giants midfielder Tom Green passionately voiced his frustration with MRO inconsistencies. Read what he said.

1:15pm: ROWELL’S SLUMP

After round seven, Matt Rowell’s lowest score of the season was 99, with his other six scores all exceeding 125. He was hot property - but you have to feel for the SuperCoaches that jumped on, because his decline was stark.

Since then Rowell has only surpassed the ton twice and his past five scores are below 82.

The 20 per cent of coaches that own him will today be watching how he performs with bated breath, and Fantasy Freako pointed out that he averages just 16 disposals against the Giants.

1:05pm: HAWKS DEFENCE WILL BE KEY

Following the pair of early Saturday afternoon games what many are tipping to be the match of the day awaits at 4.30pm this afternoon when Hawthorn take on Collingwood.

The Hawks are one of the in form teams of the competition and are mounting a late charge towards the eight, while its a crunch clash for Collingwood who are staring down the barrel of three-straight losses.

Much has been made of Hawthorn’s attacking play, but their defence has been key to their rise, find out why.

12:45pm: NO LATE CHANGES

None of the four sides in action from 1.45 are springing any late team changes, but two sub calls are set to cause SuperCoaches headaches however

Xavier O’Halloran has been named as the Giants sub ahead of their clash with the Suns, while Will Graham will don the vest for Gold Coast. It’s not ideal for the 10.2 per cent of coaches that are still relying on Graham to provide some handy bench cover (I hope).

The travelling Eagles have named Josh Rotham as the sub against St Kilda, and Hugo Garcia - who is also in 11.2 per cent of SuperCoach teams - is the Saints sub.
