Howe deemed good to go

COLLINGWOOD midfielder Travis Varcoe shared a heartfelt moment with his teammates before today’s training session, reading the words of his late sister as the team prepares for Saturday’s Grand Final against West Coast.

Magpie Jack Crisp has revealed that Varcoe, whose sister Maggie passed away earlier this month after a head clash during a football match in South Australia, drew on a message she had written before her tragic death.

“He had something that his sister wrote down for a training session before their grand final, and it related really well to what we want to do – make sure we train really well and stuff like that and have a bit of fun,” Crisp said.

“It was a special moment, and he wore his sister’s club number – No. 1 – out there today. It was really good to see for him.’

Varcoe, 30, is endeavouring to win a third premiership on Saturday after twice claiming flag honours with Geelong, and said his teammates had been “massive”.

“This is our last training session together to get ready for the game,” Varcoe said to his teammates this morning.

“Couldn’t have scripted it any better and it’s all about training, the way we train is the way we play, so I just wanted to share that with you.

“You guys have been massive for me. And this is the reason I want to train really well.”
