According to the Herald Sun, Johnson was opening a gate when a knife inside a bag he was carrying came into contact with the gate and protruded through and into his stomach.

The 40-year-old was then tended to by a neighbour before being taken to Wangaratta hospital for emergency surgery.

While he’s reported to have escaped any serious injuries, the 293-game star remains in hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.

The knife within the bag is said to have been covered by a plastic case but was sharp enough to pierce through the cover and the bag, the Herald Sun reports.

He won three premierships with Geelong, claiming the prestigious Norm Smith Medal during the 2017 victory.

He remained within the football fraternity as he joined Triple M’s calling team and quickly became a fan favourite behind the microphone.
