Boosted by some key returns, the Eagles showed some more ticker against Geelong last weekend and are not without a chance of snagging a win in the run home to climb off the bottom of the ladder. Whether they finish 17th or 18th, they would end up with two picks inside the top 20 at this year’s draft — not a luxury that the Eagles recruiters have enjoyed for a long time. The Eagles will be hoping Port Adelaide does not make a late-season surge up the ladder, given they hold the Power’s second-round selection after a pick swap last year.

The Kangaroos don’t look like winning many more games. If they cannot secure another four points, a one-win season would be the club’s worst result since 1972. But it’s not all bad news. If Brisbane father-son prospect Will Ashcroft decides not to nominate to the Lions in a bid to stay in Melbourne, the prolific ball-winning midfielder could be headed to Arden Street. The Kangaroos’ second-round draft pick is held by Richmond as part of the Callum Coleman-Jones trade last year – meaning they won’t have another pick until well into the 50s. The Kangaroos have access to Cooper Harvey as a father-son, who is the son of former champion Brent.

The Bombers upset the Saints last week and could pull off another surprise or two if they continue to play like that but do face a tough run home. They will be able to land a high-end talent with a top-six pick. A bid for father-son prospect and talented small forward Alwyn Davey Jnr won’t come in the top six picks, but could come in the top 30. Twin brother Jayden Davey could attract a bid later in the draft after missing this year with a knee reconstruction. The Bombers also have another small forward in their Next Generation Academy in Anthony Munkara, but are unlikely to get access to him given the top 40 picks are protected from matching NGA bids.

15. ADELAIDE (4-9, 80.1%)

The Crows have lost six of their last seven matches, but have a few winnable games in the run home with matches against bottom-two sides North Melbourne (twice) and West Coast. Melbourne holds Adelaide’s third-round pick and GWS holds the Crows’ fourth-rounder, meaning the next pick the club has got after its second-round selection is pick 76. There are some high-end key position players from South Australia this year that the Crows will be keeping an eye on, including Harry Lemmey, Mattaes Phillipou and Tom Scully. The Crows also have father-son access to AFL Academy member Max Michalanney, whose father Jim played more than 200 SANFL games for Norwood.

14. HAWTHORN (4-9, 87.5%)

While the Hawks might have just four wins to their name, they still look a dangerous side capable of scoring a few more wins in the run home. Regardless, they look like ending up with a pick in the top eight at the draft table. The Hawks would be hoping that Fremantle and Gold Coast don’t climb the ladder too much, given they hold their round three and round four picks respectively rather than their own picks in those rounds. Hawthorn has father-son access to Vic Metro squad member Jerome Lawrence, whose father Stephen played 146 games for the club including the 1991 premiership.

Seven goals from Toby Greene were not enough to get the Giants over the line against the Western Bulldogs last weekend. GWS has a tough run home, but could pull off an upset or two. The Giants have their own picks as well holding an additional fourth-round pick that is linked to Adelaide. The Giants have a few talented draft prospects in their Academy this year, including Harry Rowston, Nick Madden and Luke Lawerence.

12. PORT ADELAIDE (6-7, 105.3%)

The Power surged to a strong upset win over Sydney last weekend, but it would still take something very special to play finals from here. Port Adelaide still holds its first round pick (currently pick 7) but it’s next selection after that is a third-round pick linked to Sydney.

11. GOLD COAST (7-6, 111.6%)

The Suns got the job done against the Crows last Sunday and have now won five of their past six matches. They currently have six picks in the top 50, which is a good spot to be for a team pushing for finals. The Suns hold second-round picks linked to Collingwood and Fremantle, as well as an extra third-round pick linked to Collingwood. The brother of Gold Coast’s Elijah Hollands is available in this year’s draft and is a highly-rated midfielder, while the Suns also have access to a few likely types from their Academy in Marlin Corbett, Jed Walter and Jake Rogers.

10. WESTERN BULLDOGS (7-6, 118.6%)

The Bulldogs remain in the finals hunt after scoring an important win over GWS last weekend and are set to regain important key forward Josh Bruce. However, there is a tough run of six matches still coming up against finals contenders. The Bulldogs hold their own first and second round picks but have North Melbourne’s third-round pick instead of their own.

9. COLLINGWOOD (8-5, 105.4%)

The Magpies should be fresh off a bye, but instead have had some off-field dramas to deal with. The hope will be that those issues don’t derail what has been a brilliant start to the season, capped off by a win over reigning premier Melbourne before the bye. Collingwood holds its own first round pick, but its second-round pick is with Gold Coast as part of a pick swap last year.

8. ST KILDA (8-5, 113.3%)

The Saints let one slip against Essendon last Friday night, falling by 35 points to drop to the edge of the top eight. They face a few more tough matches over the next month, which leaves them vulnerable. St Kilda holds its own picks in the first three rounds of the draft. The Saints have had their eye on Next Generation Academy member Cameron Mackenzie, but the draft bolter is shaping as a first-round pick and the first 40 picks are protected from bids being matched for academy products.

The Swans suffered a surprise loss to Port Adelaide last weekend, who were in the bottom half of the ladder. However, they face only three more games against top-eight sides in a reasonable run home. Sydney holds both its own first-round pick as well as Melbourne’s first-round pick, which was acquired as part of the Jordan Dawson trade last year.

6. RICHMOND (8-5, 117.8%)

The Tigers got the chocolates against Carlton last week and have now won six of their past seven matches. They face a tough game against Geelong this week, who they lost to by 38 points in Round 19 last year. However, overall, it’s not a bad run home. The Tigers had a strong draft hand last year and have another strong hand this year. They hold North Melbourne’s second-round pick (currently pick 20), which was acquired as part of the Callum Coleman-Jones trade last year.

5. CARLTON (9-4, 112.3%)

The Blues have lost two of their past three matches after last week’s defeat at the hands of Richmond. Injuries have been an issue and there is unlikely to be much relief on that front in coming weeks, which shapes as a difficult run. Carlton holds its own first and second round picks, but its third-round selection is with Geelong, after being handed over as part of the Adam Cerra trade last year.

The Cats were a bit rusty coming off the bye against an improved West Coast last weekend but did what they needed to do and still got the win. They still have five games to play at GMHBA Stadium in what looks a reasonable run home. Geelong’s draft picks could get pushed back a few spots if their ladder position improves, but they have a solid hand as it stands, which includes third-round picks linked to Carlton and Brisbane.

The Dockers are coming off a bye and look like winning quite a few more games in the run home. The national draft would be the last thing on their mind at the moment and they have a limited hand anyway. Fremantle’s second-round pick is in the hands of Gold Coast and its third-round pick is with Hawthorn. The Dockers have access to Jaren Carr as a father-son, who is the son of former Docker and Saint Matthew Carr.

A mid-season form slump has seen the Demons give up top spot on the ladder – a position they had held since Round 4. They lost to Collingwood before the bye and face a tough return to the field against the ladder-leading Lions. You still have to back the reigning premiers bounce back from their slump and get things right in the race to finals. Melbourne fans wouldn’t be too worried about the draft at this stage, but the club’s first-round pick is with Sydney after a big four-way pick swap last year.

Coming off the bye, the Lions have a big away clash second-placed Melbourne to kickstart the second half of the season. A Grand Final berth would be on the Lions minds rather than the national draft. However, there could be a bit to get excited about post season. Will Ashcroft – the son of Lions premiership player Marcus – is available as a father-son option. Ashcroft is considered to be the most talented player in this year’s draft pool, but the prolific Sandringham Dragons midfielder is yet to indicate if he will nominate for the Lions. The Lions are more confident about securing another father-son in Jaspa Fletcher, the son of Adrian. Brisbane Academy member Shadeau Brain has also attracted some interest as a medium forward.
