Port Adelaide news: Travis Boak’s playing future to be decided this week

Travis Boak’s future has been cause for much speculation and interest, and it appears the Power legend is not far away from knowing whether he has a future at Alberton.

A call on whether Travis Boak will play on in 2024 is expected this week.

The Port Adelaide AFL games record holder is weighing up whether he continues into an 18th season next year after the Power put the ball in Boak’s court regarding his future.

The former captain and 348-game veteran had his exit meeting last week and hinted he wanted to play another season saying he had “plenty in the body” and “fire in the belly”.

The Power have said it will retain Boak if the 35-year-old does want to continue playing.

Boak has been weighing this up and a decision is expected this week.

Boak performed strongly in the club’s 23-point knockout semi-final loss to GWS to end an up-and-down personal season.

Having entered the campaign off the back of four consecutive top-two finishes in the best-and-fairest, he was shifted to a wing this year and was the substitute four times.

Port Adelaide footy boss Chris Davies said last week the Power did not want Boak to end up playing in the SANFL in 2024.

“Someone like Travis deserves far better than to play footy at SANFL level and that’s not to be disrespectful to the SANFL,” he said.

“In these situations you’ll be honest with the player and say ‘we don’t want that’ but we also think you’ve still got some things to give us at AFL level.

“We’ve told Travis that if he wants to play, we want him to continue to play at Port Adelaide at AFL level, not be thinking about playing at SANFL level. We want him to have the best pre-season as he possibly can if he continues to play and be an integral member of our team, as he has been the last 16 seasons.”

Ruckman Scott Lycett is also weighing up whether he plays on in 2024 after some injury impacted years.

If the 30-year-old does pull the pin, then he could end up at Port District with rumours rife in local footy circles.

Injury plagued small forward Orazio Fantasia is working on a new one-year deal to remain at Alberton, despite not featuring at AFL level since Round 3.
