Greater Western Sydney forward Bobby Hill made the remarkable choice to play against Brisbane on Saturday despite a diagnosis last week of testicular cancer that will put him out of the game indefinitely.

The 22-year-old will undergo surgery next week with the results from a medical assessment to determine if further treatment is required.

He is yet another AFL player to be sidelined with testicular cancer after Sam Rowe, Sam Docherty and Ben Cunnington.

While there is an extremely high success rate of curing testicular cancer the tale recurrence that Carlton star Docherty suffered underlines the risk.

Yet after a diagnosis last week Hill was told despite needing surgery in the coming week it was his choice to play.

He was keen to do so and made an early impact despite the Lions coming over the top of the spirited GWS side in a one-goal, four tackle, six disposal display.

Despite the uncertainty of his treatment ahead, Hill’s decision was exceptional for a club lacking small forwards and keen to test the Lions at the Gabba.

Hill has been closely linked to a move to Melbourne after an aborted trade deal last year but will clearly focus on his health first before any decision about his future.

Giants General Manager of Football Jason McCartney said the goalsneak was in good spirits.

“Bobby and his family have our full support, as always, as they go through this period,” McCartney said.

“His health and wellbeing is our absolute priority and he’ll have the best medical care as he undergoes surgery on Tuesday and beyond.

“There’ll be a period of time for him to recover before further medical assessment to understand if any additional steps are required.”

Fellow Giants forward Jesse Hogan also took time out from the game in 2017 after he was also diagnosed with testicular cancer.
