Former Collingwood and Adelaide player Ben Crocker has paid a moving tribute to his father, Paul, who has died at home in Melbourne surrounded by family.

Paul Crocker was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014 and had been in full-time care as his health deteriorated.

Ben, who was delisted by the Crows last month after seven games in his sole season at the club, posted the news of his dad’s passing on Instagram and said he would be remembered for his cheeky smile and infectious personality.

“After a near 10 year battle our beautiful Pauly passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family,” wrote Ben, who had been back in Melbourne since parting with Adelaide.

“A much loved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend.

“We are absolutely heartbroken but will continue to live life with the greatest memories full of happiness and laughter just like you would have wanted.

“We choose to remember you for someone who’s (sic) cheeky smile and infectious personality would light up the room.

“You would be so proud of our family and how we dealt with this illness over the last few years, you fought so hard but ultimately you knew it was the right time to leave us, so we can start our new chapter.

“Forever and always Pauly crock.”

Ben lived with his family in Surrey Hills until joining the Crows as a rookie at the end of last year and, apart from when he returned home for several weeks during the COVID shutdown, he did not see them in person all season.

In the lead-up to Father’s Day, with Paul in hospital after a setback and unable to have visitors, Ben opened up to The Advertiser about the impact being away from his dad was having on his football and life, and how daily Facetime calls had been a blessing.

“Your first emotion is, ‘I’m not there to help’,” said Ben, who also played 26 matches for Collingwood.

“When you’re in Melbourne (looking after him) every day, you’re like, ‘I need a break’, but now that I’m not there, I kind of miss doing that stuff.

“I don’t talk to him (on Facetime), it’s purely for me and my own comfort to see his face.

“Seeing his face makes it all a lot easier.”

Ben has been training regularly with close friend and ex-Magpies teammate Jordan de Goey since returning to Melbourne.
