AFL teams: Latest news and line-ups for round 9

Carlton is reeling from a raft of forced changes, but will unveil an exciting forward prospect, while high-flying Fremantle will be further strengthened. See all the ins and outs for round 9.

Exciting Carlton forward Jesse Motlop will make his AFL debut against the Giants on Sunday as part of the Blues’ plan for a long stint without Coleman medallist Harry McKay.

McKay’s knee injury, which is expected to sideline him for the next six weeks, further decimates the club’s tall stocks, leaving in-form partner-in-crime Charlie Curnow with a massive job in his absence.

George Hewett (corked calf) needs only to negotiate training on Friday to make a timely return to face Greater Western Sydney’s on-ball brigade after a fortnight out.

Jesse Motlop will make his debut for Carlton as Michael Voss opts for a smaller forward line against Greater Western Sydney.

Marc Pittonet (knee), Mitch McGovern (hamstring), Lewis Young (Covid protocols) and Oscar McDonald (back) are unavailable, with coach Michael Voss conceding Carlton had little option but to go smaller in attack.

But Voss said they were wary not to make wholesale changes to the game plan in such a short period.

“Bits and pieces (will be different) but you’ve got to be really careful, because you just can’t possibly rebrand yourself within seven days,” he said.

“We feel like we’ve got a style that will stand up with some further constraints thrown at us and that’s certainly one of those constraints.

The Giants have swung one change for the Carlton clash — Leon Cameron’s last game as coach — bringing in Conor Stone and dropping small forward Bobby Hill and Matt Flynn.

Melbourne continues to have a dream run with injury, naming an unchanged line-up to tackle West Coast in Perth.

The Eagles continue to swing multiple changes each week, losing veterans Shannon Hurn and Andrew Gaff to injury and bringing in four players this week — Jackson Nelson, Alex Witherden, Greg Clark and Bailey Williams.

Fremantle has lost forward Michael Walters to Covid-19 protocols but will travel to the Gold Coast strengthened by the return of Blake Acres, Travis Colyer, Michael Frederick, Rory Lobb and Griffin Logue.

The Suns have called up Noah Anderson and Joel Jeffrey.

Pies lose their entertainer

Collingwood lost Jack Ginnivan to illness for Friday night’s clash against the Western Bulldogs.

Ginnivan missed the Pies’ main training session on Thursday and has not recovered in time to tackle the Dogs, who regain captain Marcus Bontempelli and key defender Alex Keath for the must-win encounter.

The Bulldogs have also named debutant Luke Cleary plus Rhylee West and young big man Jordan Sweet, who will ruck in the absence of Tim English and Stef Martin (managed).

Geelong stars Joel Selwood and Rhys Stanley are back to take on St Kilda, while Jack Billings will play his first game for the season for the Saints.

Carlton has lost Harry McKay and Jack Martin to injury and Lewis Young to Health and Safety protocols, but named George Hewett, Paddy Dow and Jesse Motlop for a possible AFL debut. The small forward was selected with pick 27 in last year’s draft.

Richmond has lost promising key defender Josh Gibcus to Covid-19 protocols and replaced him with debutant Bigoa Nyuon. Known as ‘Biggie’, Nyuon was born in Kenya into a South Sudanese family, spending the first three years of his life in a refugee camp before his family arrived in Australia.

The Tigers regained premiership stars Dion Prestia and Nick Vlastuin for Saturday’s clash with Hawthorn, after they sat out of the win over Collingwood with a non-Covid illness, and managed veteran Shane Edwards.

Hawthorn has made four changes, managing Tom Mitchell and dropping top draft pick Josh Ward. The Brownlow Medallist has been unwell and unable to train this week.

North Melbourne’s season isn’t getting any easier with Ben McKay and Jason Horne-Francis both ruled out of Saturday’s clash against Port Adelaide at Blundstone Arena through injury. But Nick Larkey is back from suspension.

The Crows have made a statement, dropping five players – Reilly O’Brien, Brayden Cook, Billy Frampton, Harry Schoenberg and Lachlan Gollant – for their clash against Brisbane. Brodie Smith, Ned McHenry and ruckman Keiran Strachan are among the inclusions.

Brisbane named Eric Hipwood for his first game for the year, replacing injured forward Dan McStay.

Fremantle has six inclusions against Gold Coast, losing Nathan O’Driscoll to a foot injury and Michael Walters to Health and Safety protocols. The Suns have named former Cat Charlie Constable for his first game for the club.

Earlier on Thursday Richmond coach Damien Hardwick backed Prestia, who was dealing with achilles and soleus muscle tightness before his week off, to make an immediate impact.

“He’s had as good a pre-season as he’s ever had in his time at the club, so we’re really bullish about his return (but) every now and then he’s going to miss some games,” he said.

“It’s just the nature of the industry and the nature of Dion, really, but he’s got a big body of work behind him.

“We’re very confident once he gets back in and gets up and going; he’ll be an incredibly valuable player for us.

“He’s obviously an incredible player and one of our very best, so we look forward to welcoming him back this week.”
