AFL 2023: The latest on every out-of-contract player at Port Adelaide

A one-year deal is on the cards for Port Adelaide veteran Travis Boak – but things aren’t so certain with other household names. Get the latest on every out-of-contract player.

Port Adelaide has a host of players who remain unsigned beyond the end of this season.

Unlike Adelaide, which has been on a mid-year re-signing spree, the Power has been quiet during its bye.

As the club heads into the second half of the campaign, we have analysed who is set to be kept, whose future is up in the air and who will be getting nervous about whether they remain at Alberton.

Plenty can change over the coming weeks and months, including Port’s off-season plans influencing players’ chances of landing new deals.

Here is the status of every Power player without a contract for 2024 (in guernsey number order):

1. Tom Jonas

Age: 32

AFL games: 211

Status: In trouble

The Power captain’s future hangs in the balance. Although the hard-nosed defender believes he has at least one more year left in the tank and may return for the club’s finals push, the chances of him getting a contract extension appear bleak. He has been overlooked for the past three matches and Port is getting AFL games into its younger defenders amid an 11-game winning streak. Looks set to be his last season given it is unlikely he will play on elsewhere despite some interest from other clubs.

6. Kane Farrell

Age: 24

AFL games: 61

Status: Expected to stay

Farrell is flying under the radar as a key Power player who is without a deal for 2024. Port hopes to keep the long-kicking left-footer and he is not expected to leave, but a new contract is yet to be struck. The club showed significant faith in the Victorian in late 2021 when it re-signed him for two seasons when he was recovering from a serious knee injury.

10. Travis Boak

Age: 34

AFL games: 338

Status: Will stay

The evergreen midfielder has featured in 11 matches this year and his performances on a wing have shown he has plenty left to offer. He is one of the oldest players in the competition, but age is almost irrelevant for the ex-skipper, who is renowned for going to big lengths to remain at the top of his game. Another one-year deal into an 18th season in 2024 is on the cards.

12. Trent McKenzie

Age: 31

AFL games: 158

Status: Will stay

After playing just seven games last year, McKenzie has bounced back this season to play 12 matches and is headed for a seventh campaign at the Power in 2024. Port is in the market for a tall defender, but that will not come at the expense of a list spot for the ex-Gold Coast Sun.

13. Orazio Fantasia

Age: 27

AFL games: 99

Status: Up in the air

What happens with the injury-prone goalsneak will be determined by how many games he can string together in the back half of the season. If he does not play regularly, he may be in trouble. After featuring just once at AFL level last year – as an unused substitute – Fantasia has played three times in 2023, most recently as the sub in round 3. He was then sidelined with another quad injury. Since being out of the AFL side, Port has gone on an 11-game winning streak and the likes of Jed McEntee have taken his spot.

14. Miles Bergman

Age: 21

AFL games: 47

Status: Up in the air

Port is really keen for the 2019 No. 14 pick to stay, but he is yet to inform the club of his intentions. St Kilda is believed to be among the teams keen on the Victorian. As he weighs up what is best for him, whether to wants to stay in South Australia or return home, there is a deal on the table from Port. Bergman has played all 14 matches this season, moving to half-back from the wing. The Power is hoping for an answer as soon as possible, but there is no timeline as to when he will make a call.

19. Mitch Georgiades

Age: 21

AFL games: 49

Status: Up in the air

Port Adelaide is hopeful the high-flying forward will remain at the club, but he is yet to indicate his plans. He has rival interest, not only from his home state of Western Australia, but also Victoria. Georgiades is sidelined for the remainder of this season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in April.

22. Charlie Dixon

Age: 32

AFL games: 198

Status: Will stay

The Power is expected to re-sign the spearhead in the next month or so. Although he has had another injury-interrupted season, Dixon remains a crucial part of the Power’s premiership push and its forward structure. He ideally wants a multi-year new deal, but given his injury history and age – he turns 33 in September – a 12-month contract, potentially with games triggers, seems more likely.

23. Dylan Williams

Age: 21

AFL games: 12

Status: Expected to stay

Williams has been one of the Power’s success stories this season and is set to be rewarded with a new deal. Delisted at the end of last year before being retained as a rookie, Williams has found a home in defence, where his footy smarts, ball use and cleanliness have shone. Will be pushing for a multi-year extension. Getting cut means he is an unrestricted free agent and other clubs have enquired about him.

25. Sam Hayes

Age: 24

AFL games: 7

Status: In trouble

This will almost certainly be the Victorian ruckman’s last season with the Power. After featuring in seven consecutive matches between rounds 5 and 11 last season, Hayes has not been picked since at AFL level.

26. Riley Bonner

Age: 26

AFL games: 91

Status: Up in the air

Bonner’s future will likely depend on the Power’s other list plans, including potential off-season moves. The wingman/half-back has been the substitute in three of his nine matches this year, including the past two, and is unlikely to be in the club’s best side if everyone is available. Could stay, but Port might choose to move on after eight seasons. A wait and see either way.

27. Brynn Teakle

Age: 23

AFL games: 6

Status: Up in the air

Teakle’s position on the list is uncertain as the Power works through its long-term ruck options. The 2022 mid-season draftee has played six AFL games, including four this year. Like with fellow big man Scott Lycett, a new contract looms as a wait and see.

29. Scott Lycett

Age: 30

AFL games: 142

Status: Up in the air

Lycett is far from a certainty to remain at the Power, despite wanting to stay at the club and having a strong month at AFL level. Looms as a knife-edge, late-season decision that hinges on what Port plans to do with its ruck stocks, considering Brynn Teakle’s future is also clouded. Had looked headed for the exit door earlier this year when he was playing in the SANFL, needing to get his body right and gain confidence, but he was now forcing the Power into a difficult decision.

36. Jase Burgoyne

Age: 19

AFL games: 10

Status: Expected to stay

The son of Power premiership star Peter Burgoyne has featured just twice this season, kept out of the side amid the team’s strong form, but the club likes him and will look to extend his contract.

39. Hugh Jackson

Age: 20

AFL games: 0

Status: Will stay

Yet to make his AFL debut, the light-bodied midfielder has made some ground this season, being named as an emergency and performing well in the SANFL. Port thinks he has a career ahead of him so he is safe.

41. Jed McEntee

Age: 22

AFL games: 21

Status: Expected to stay

McEntee’s hard work will earn him a contract extension. The Power loves the 2021 mid-season draftee, who with Darcy Byrne-Jones and Sam Powell-Pepper, has helped to transform Port’s small forward unit into arguably the best in the competition in terms of pressure.

43. Trent Dumont

Age: 27

AFL games: 121

Status: In trouble

Headed for the exit and it difficult to see the former North Melbourne on-baller playing at AFL level again for the Power. Dumont featured eight times last season, but the club’s increased midfield depth and an early-season calf injury had kept him in the SANFL this year.

45. Nathan Barkla

Age: 19

AFL games: 0

Status: Up in the air

A decision on the Category B rookie looks likely to be made later in the season. In his first campaign with the club, Barkla has featured in nine SANFL matches.

47. Quinton Narkle

Age: 25

AFL games: 42

Status: Expected to stay

Arrived at Port Adelaide on a six-month deal and now heading for an extension. Not just because he has already shown promise, kicking two goals in his club debut against former team Geelong last round, but the Power has a history of keeping its mid-season draftees beyond their initial contract.
