AFL 2023 free agency list: Jay Clark verdict on top targets for rival clubs

The structure of the Carlton forward half will be a fascinating watch in 2023 as Michael Voss tries to piece the puzzle together. But does this squeeze out a popular heart-and-soul type?

Carlton and Michael Voss look poised for a big season in 2023 but money is tight with the developing list and could one of the club’s much-loved stars be pushed out?

Clearly, Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay, Tom De Koning, Jack Silvagni and Marc Pittonet help form a quality spine, but how big is too big?

Expect other clubs to look closely throughout the season at Silvagni with doubts the Blues will have the room to match an attractive offer.

Meanwhile, it is going to be a big job for three of the league’s new coaches.

Can they create the kind of environment that will help keep their star free agents at the club? For Essendon’s Brad Scott (Darcy Parish and Mason Redman) Ross Lyon (Jade Gresham) and Alastair Clarkson (Ben McKay), the proof will be in the pudding as some of their most important players either recommit or hold off on contract talks next year.

But, as clubs have said repeatedly in recent months, the 2023 free agency group isn’t a bumper crop as many of the big guns entering their eighth season, such as Carlton’s Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay, have already resigned this year.

This pre-agent signing move is becoming an increasingly common trend to help keep stars from walking out as free agents.

Who is left? Jay Clark names 25 players to watch.

*Can qualify for restricted free agency if they are in their eighth or ninth season and are among the top 25 per cent highest-paid players at their club. Original clubs can match bids on restricted free agents.
