Who has conceded the most free kicks at your club?
HAWTHORN firebrand James Sicily gave away a season-high seven free kicks last weekend, but who holds the record? See who the top five offenders are at your club.
JAMES Sicily got a taste of his own medicine last Saturday night but it didn’t go down very well.
The Hawthorn firebrand was harassed all game by Carlton’s Jed Lamb and an irritated Sicily gave away seven free kicks — the equal most by a player this season.
His night of frustration began early in the first quarter when he caught holding the ball by Lamb, who hurled the Hawks defender into the ground after the free was awarded.
FREE KICKS: THE TEAMS WHO ARE RIGHT AT HOME
RAW DEAL: WERE THE TIGERS REALLY HARD DONE BY?
That clearly put Sicily into an antagonistic mood for the rest of the night.
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said Carlton’s niggling tactic would be a “good learning curve” for Sicily, whose fiery temper was on display against Fremantle last month after he gave teammate Taylor Duryea a spray and a shove after copping a ball into his head.
It’s no surprise Sicily is ranked equal second at Hawthorn for frees against with 26, but his tally is well outside the top 10 in the league.
GWS ruckman Shane Mumford — the other player to concede seven frees in a game this season — tops the list with a staggering 55, 12 more than the next worst, Port Adelaide’s Jackson Trengove.
Contested ball hunters Clayton Oliver, Nat Fyfe, Dustin Martin and Sam Powell-Pepper are not far behind when it comes to having the umpire’s whistle blown against them this year.
Sicily and Mumford are nowhere near the record for conceding the most free kicks in a game.
That honour belongs to ex-Collingwood midfielder Mark Williams, who gave away 13 frees in a game in 1983 and 11 in a game in 1981.
Melbourne ruckman Max Walker gave away 12 frees in a match in 1969.
Six other players have given up 11 free kicks in a game — Don Scott (1970), Jeff Sarau (1982), Matthew Connell (1995), Mark Maclure (1978), Wayne Johnston (1984) and Mike Fitzpatrick (1983).
