Toby Greene can accept a two-game ban, Toby Nankervis a one-match ban from MRP
UPDATE: THE Giants will consider challenging the suspension handed to Toby Greene today, with coach Leon Cameron describing him as ‘a really good kid’. Plus a big blow for Richmond.
TOBY Greene can accept a two-week ban for his strike on Bulldog Caleb Daniel.
The incident - from Friday night’s clash in Canberra - was assessed by the match review panel today with the Giants star offered two weeks on the sidelines.
Tigers ruck Toby Nankervis was the only other player offered a sanction, a one-match ban for his elbow on Crow David Mackay.
FEEDBACK: PLAYERS ARE NOT TARGETS OF UMPIRES
REPORTED: “YOU’RE GETTING VERY CLOSE TO THE EDGE”
On Monday night, the Giants were considering whether to challenge Greene’s ban, with coach Leon Cameron forecasting a Monday night of “good discussion”. Greene risks an extra week on the sidelines should he elect to challenge and fail.
“We’re going to have a good discussion about it tonight, whether or not we do contest the two-week suspension,” Cameron told Fox Sports News.
“It’s disappointing that we are going down this track because we are going to lose him, whether it is for a game or two games, we’ll find that out over the coming day or so.
“There’s a number of things we want to have a look at tonight just to discuss that, whether or not there is an angle to go down.
“I don’t want people just to focus on a negative that we’ve seen on the weekend because there’s probably 98 per cent that’s really, really good.
“He’s a really good kid, he’s starting to grow into a young man and he’s a very popular figure amongst our footy club. And he knows first-hand that he has let his team down in this situation. I’m confident he’s going to learn from this and hopefully we don’t see him up here again.”
Three fines were issued by the MRP, with Dockers skipper Nat Fyfe slapped with a $1000 sanction for striking Eagle Elliot Yeo, while Kangaroo Luke McDonald can accept a $1000 fine for striking Michael Barlow.
Fellow Roo Lachlan Hansen can accept a $1500 fine for rough conduct on Sun Touk Miller.
Four other incidents were assessed, with Giant Jacob Hopper, Lance Franklin and Jack Ziebell all cleared of any wrongdoing.
Giants ruck Shane Mumford was also cleared for his huge tackle that left Bulldogs gun Tom Liberatore concussed, with the panel determining that “Mumford did not lift or rotate opponent in the tackle and the tackle consisted of one action”.
Greene’s strike was assessed as intentional with the MRP applying a three-game ban with an early guilty plea reducing it to two.
“Based on the available video evidence and a medical report ... the incident was assessed as intentional conduct with medium impact to the head,” the MRP statement said.
“The incident was classified as a three-match sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a two-match sanction.”
Nankervis will miss Richmond’s clash with reigning premiers the Western Bulldogs after his elbow on Sunday evening.
“The incident was assessed as careless conduct with medium impact to the head,” the panel said.
