GWS theme song ‘There’s a big, big sound’ enjoying cult following in AFL Grand Final week

The colours and players struggled to win over fans, but a catchy song — and an avalanche of online memes — has endeared the GWS Giants to the footy world.
Since the Giants qualified for the Grand Final, the internet has been flooded with hilarious clips set to the distinctive tune of the Giants theme song “There’s a big, big sound”.
Some have even argued the song has surpassed Richmond’s “Oh, We’re from Tigerland”, long regarded as the best club tune in the AFL.

The genius behind the “big, big sound” is Harry Angus, a member of Australian band Cat Empire, who said he simply “tried to obey all these rules of footy songs” when given the task of writing a song for the AFL’s newest team.
“So you have got the middle brass chorus, they have got the men singing jauntily and all I really did was put it in a minor key,” Angus said on Channel 10.
“It went instantly Russian, which I didn’t realise at the time. But I agree.”
The song has been embraced by AFL fans ahead of Saturday’s grand final between the Giants and Richmond, being dubbed over footage from The Simpsons, Peppa Pig and earning its own hashtag #bigbigsound.

“I just wrote this little song, it was a bit of fun. I sent it in and I don’t think anyone else even sent a song in,” Angus said.
“But they liked my one that’s what we ended up with. The players seem to like it and I think it just needs a few years to sink into people’s consciousness.
“Then it just kind of slips in with the others because it sounds right.”
Angus said the song was owned by the club, but he makes $10 every time GWS wins – which has equated to $160 this year.

The surge in popularity has sparked debate on whether Saturday’s AFL Grand Final will feature not only the competition’s best two teams, but also the game’s best two theme songs?
Oh We’re From Tigerland has been a favourite among footy fans — not just those of the yellow and black persuasion — for decades.
But while the GWS Giants have been a slow burn for some AFL fans, their theme song, There’s a Big, Big Sound, might just be rocketing up the charts.
