Luke Shuey after-the-siren, matchwinning goal the latest in thrilling finals finishes

THERE have been only three AFL finals go to extra-time and now Luke Shuey has added to the list of thrilling September finishes. POST-SIREN HEROES AND VILLAINS

LUKE Shuey isn’t the King of Perth but he now sits alongside some of the game’s greats to win a final after the siren.

Billy Brownless’s 1994 qualifying final winner against Footscray is perhaps the most famous but there have been seven post-siren kicks to decide games in the past 30 years.

It didn’t work out so well for David King in 1994 when his shot fell short and saw North Melbourne draw with Hawthorn. Luckily the Kangaroos got the job done in extra-time. Last year Isaac Smith missed the chance to win the game for the Hawks in the qualifying final against Geelong.

Adding to the drama, Shuey’s kick came in extra-time — a slice of history in itself — as West Coast edged Port Adelaide in one of the greatest finals in VFL/AFL history.

Since the AFL introduced extra-time for finals in 1991, there have been three games go into overtime.

It started with King’s miss in 1994 then Collingwood and West Coast couldn’t be split at full-time in the 2007 semi-final.

Ironically, it was the Magpies and Eagles that forced the league to adopt extra-time.

In 1990 the clubs drew their qualifying final at Waverley and under the rules of the time had to play a replay the week later — forcing the rest of the finals series to be postponed a week.

Up to that point there had been eight finals finish in draws with Collingwood involved in four of them.

That’s not including the 2010 Grand Final between the Magpies and St Kilda, which famously ended in a draw and saw the teams return a week later.

That will be the last Grand Final replay with the AFL now using extra-time to decide the decider as well.
