COLLINGWOOD forward Alex Fasolo will have scans during the week with the Magpies fearing the small forward may have suffered a syndesmosis injury in his first game of the season.

COLLINGWOOD’s Alex Fasolo’s return to AFL lasted less than a half with the club sweating on scans to determine the fate of the “dirty” forward.

And coach Nathan Buckley fears could be serious. Fasolo – who was playing his first game of the season - was felled with the injury in the second quarter of the 28-point win over St Kilda and did not return to the field. “He’s upset, and we think it’s a syndesmosis ankle injury, but he’ll have a scan,” Buckley said. We’ll know more about it when we get the scans. “But clearly, getting his opportunity and then getting injured early in the game … he’s a bit dirty and has got plenty of emotions going on. “We’ll get around him – it’s pretty early in the year, so we’ll give him plenty of time.” The 25-year-old had shoulder surgery over summer and it was hoped he could boost the Magpies’ scoring ability as its wretched run of injuries continued. Jordan de Goey stepped up on the scoring front, booting six straight goals in the victory, in a role Buckley said he was growing to enjoy. “(He was) significant, especially through those second and third quarters – when we hit the scoreboard, he was the guy that did most of the damage for us,” he said. “I think he’s enjoying playing as a forward probably a bit more than he thought he would. At the moment, the way that our midfield is structured and our forwardline is structured, he’s important in that part of the field.” And he could stay there, Buckley said. “If you’ve got a bloke that’s going to kick five or six, it’s pretty hard to find those guys in the competition,” he said. “It’s not just hitting the scoreboard. He’s starting to understand the role more and more, too. He is still a young AFL footballer, still learning the caper, the tricks of the trade, ways that he can make life a little easier for himself and his teammates around him. But he’s coming along.” The win was “frustrating at times”, the coach conceded, but he praised the maturity of his team to overcome a one-point half-time deficit to produce a dominant third quarter. “It was frustrating at times but for the second week in a row we made some adjustments at half time and showed the maturity to be able to change things up to get things our way,” Buckley said. “We didn’t get the result last week, got the result this week and the competition is showing that you can’t take anything for granted.
