SIX goals from Jeremy Cameron has led the Giants to a 108 point mauling of Gold Coast at Spotless Stadium.
It was the club’s biggest win ever, exposing the massive gulf between the AFL’s expansion teams.
The swag of goals moved the GWS spearhead from sixth in the race for the Coleman Medal to second, just three goals behind North Melbourne’s Ben Brown who was held goalless against Geelong.
GAME RECAP: HOW THE GIANTS TOPPED THE SUNS
MATCH STATS: WHO DOMINATED FOR THE GIANTS?
Giants coach Leon Cameron said his star forward’s effort was amazing considering he has carried a toe injury for most of the year.
“It’s extraordinary how he has only missed one game (because of a toe injury),” Cameron said.
“He is one of the toughest players I’ve seen and his preparation is spot on. Sometimes you cringe when he’s going at the footy because he’s suicidal at times and tonight was no different.”
At the other end of the ground Phil Davis continued to build his case for All Australian selection, holding Tom Lynch goalless.
Davis and the Giants’ defence restricted the Suns to just four goals for the day.
The win also gave the home side a massive 12.18 increase to its percentage.
The Giants started the day on 99.88 per cent and finished on 112, smashing the Suns on the scoreboard and at the contest which they won 185-134.
Josh Kelly, Callan Ward, Jacob Hopper, Lachie Whitfield and Dylan Shiel dominated the midfield, winning overall possession by a massive 173.
Kelly (38), Whitfield (36), Shiel (35), Ward (34) and Heath Shaw (31) all finished with 30 plus disposals.
They also set up numerous scoring opportunities with 67 inside 50s to the Suns’ 40.
The only downside for the Giants was the addition of Rory Lobb (ribs) and Daniel Lloyd (knee) to their already long injury list.
The incidents happened within a minute of each other in the second quarter when Lloyd suffered damage to the medial ligament of his left knee when a Suns player clattered into him from the side.
“Daniel will miss weeks,” Cameron said.
“It’s whether or not it’s two or three or four or five. We will wait for the next 48 hours to determine that.”
Lobb was cleared of broken ribs but was taken to hospital in an ambulance as a precaution.
But the injury toll could have been worse for GWS when Shiel rolled his ankle in the second quarter. He was assisted off the ground by trainers but was able to return to the action after halftime and played out the match.
It was a gutsy effort from the midfielder and important with the Giants two men down for the entire second half of the game.
The loss was the sixth in a row for Gold Coast, whose early season promise has evaporated.
In his first game in four weeks, Matt de Boer played well, kicking three goals to go with his 24 possessions. His first was a controversial one when he marked after the quarter time siren sounded but was awarded the grab 40 metres out directly in front which he converted.
It mattered little in the end.
The Giants have the bye next week and then will face the Lions in Brisbane in round 14. The Suns will be desperate to get their season back on track when they take on St Kilda at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.
