Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL News. Followed categories will be added to My News.
They are the players who start their team’s engine, hard-bodied insider midfielders who love getting down and dirty.
Every team requires a few of them given today’s AFL world of stoppages and here are five of the best.
SEE THE CURRENT DREAM TEAM VOTING BELOW!
LACHIE NEALE (Bris Lions)
Just keeps lifting his rating. Would find a Tom Sherrin on Mars if need be, such is his ball-winning ability.
SuperCoach price: $658,500
2019 SC average: 119
Champion Data says: Neale was one of three midfielders to rate elite for both disposals and contested possessions last season. He also rated elite for ground ball-gets and clearances.
PATRICK CRIPPS (Carlton)
Interesting to see where his career finishes, for Cripps is heading for the stars. He just needs a few more goals.
SuperCoach price: $635,900
2019 SC average: 117
Champion Data says: Cripps averaged 3.4 centre-bounce clearances and 8.5 clearances last season – ranked No. 1 in the league for each measure. He also rated elite for contested possessions and ground ball-gets.
NAT FYFE (Fremantle)
To think this physical monster was once the cox of his school rowing eight. Could end up with a record four Brownlows.
SuperCoach price: $651,600
2019 SC average: 120
Champion Data says: Fyfe averaged 17.6 contested possessions last season – ranked No.1. He also rated elite for ground ball-gets and clearances.
CLAYTON OLIVER (Melbourne)
Might be strange to say given he won a third best and fairest, but Oliver has serious room for improvement.
SuperCoach price: $593,900
2019 SC average: 109
Champion Data says: Oliver rated elite for disposals, contested possessions, ground ball-gets and clearances last season – ranked No. 1 at the club for each measure.
BEN CUNNINGTON (North Melb)
In car parlance he is a base model without fast glass or a hole in the roof, but few if any turn up more ready for the fight.
SuperCoach price: $554,100
2019 SC average: 102
Champion Data says: Since 2013, Cunnington has won the second-most clearances of any player. He also rated elite for contested possessions last year.
