CARLTON has bid farewell to its controversial grey clash strip for next season.

The Blues revealed on Wednesday players will wear a predominantly white jumper with white shorts for matches where the AFL deems there is a clash.

The league will advise the club closer to the start of the 2019 season which matches it will be required to wear the new kit.

The 2018 “wolf grey” design was widely criticised and drew the ire of Carlton members and fans in its debut during the JLT Series, with the calls for it to be dumped immediately growing throughout the season.

Supporters questioned why the club moved away from using its traditional navy blue and white colours in its designs.

“We’ve taken on board the subsequent feedback received during the year from our members and supporters in relation to the grey clash guernsey, with the preference being to see the Blues play in our traditional navy and white,” Carlton chief executive Cain Liddle said.

“We’ve listened to our stakeholders and as we’ve done in previous years, we’ll be running out in a predominantly white clash jumper next season.

“Naturally we would always prefer to wear our iconic navy blue jumper, however we are directed by the AFL on when we are unable to do so, and clash games are an example of this.

“That being said, whenever we are unable to wear our traditional navy blue, we will be reverting to the traditional white clash.”

Hawthorn has also ditched its clash guernsey, with president Jeff Kennett declaring the club will “never again” wear a white strip.

The Hawks have copped plenty of criticism for their recent clash designs, namely the metallic white and gold “power rangers” kit from 2015-16.

“White is the colour of surrender and at Hawthorn we never surrender. We might get beaten but we fight every match out to the final siren,” Kennett wrote in a letter to Hawthorn members.

“That strip has been consigned to the waste paper bin forever.

“Let’s face it brown and gold does not conflict with any other colours, so we will wear it proudly every game but one.

“The only exception will be the jumper we wear for the indigenous round, which will be a special design, recognising the importance we attach to the 16 indigenous players who have so far represented Hawthorn.”
