COLLINGWOOD has named Scott Pendlebury for Sunday’s clash against Geelong but the captain remains in serious doubt after failing to train on Friday.
Pendlebury remained indoors as his teammates hit a very wet Holden Centre track on Friday as he continues to battle an ankle injury sustained in the win over Brisbane. FLAG HEROES: WHICH BOMBERS WON’T BE AT REUNION? STAR PIE: WHY DE GOEY DOESN’T OWE THE PIES LOOKING AHEAD: SUNS HAVE STRONG HAND TO KEEP STAR Wells is joined by Gary Ablett and Harry Taylor as guns named to return from injury at the MCG on Sunday for the blockbuster between Collingwood and Geelong. Richmond has regained captain Trent Cotchin but has lost Dion Prestia to injury, while Toby Nankervis is expected to play despite murmurs he wouldn’t face the Kangaroos. Jarrad Waite is back for North Melbourne for its clash against the Tigers at Etihad Stadium after being rested last weekend. Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley confirmed he will give Pendlebury up until the very last minute to prove his fitness. “We will name him and give him every chance, but he would have to be in some doubt given he didn’t train today,” Buckley said. “We will run him all the way to the line. “Pendles has been moving on it, and he has an understanding of where it is at, so we will give him another couple of days but he wasn’t ready to go today. “In the end, if he is right to play, he will play. If he is not, he won’t. It is pretty simple. Some guys have got the threshold to be able to play with pain and injury, and some guys struggle a bit more with it. Pendles is a guy who has played that has played through quite a bit, not all of it that people on the other side of the fence would know.” Western Bulldogs have regained superstar onballer Marcus Bontempelli for Saturday night’s clash against Fremantle, but second-year ruckman Tim English has been dropped. Essendon speedster Orazio Fantasia will make his comeback for the Bombers alongside Shaun McKernan in place of injured spearhead Joe Daniher (groin) and linebreaker Andrew McGrath (calf). Carlton new recruit Darcy Lang will make his debut for the Blues against the Bombers, but captain Marc Murphy will miss another week with a foot problem. No. 1 draft pick Jacob Weitering will also remain in the VFL despite a strong performance in the reserve side last week. St Kilda was boosted by the inclusion of versatile utility Blake Acres, while Ed Phillips will make his debut against the Dockers. Paddy McCartin will miss with whiplash and Ben Long is out for 10 weeks with a fractured foot. Melbourne’s Jayden Hunt was dropped again for Christian Salem.
