AFL players show their joy over result of Australia’s marriage equality vote

FOOTBALLERS, including the biggest name in AFLW, couldn’t contain their excitement as Australians voted in favour of same-sex marriage.

SSM Marriage announcement: YES vote wins

THE votes are in, and AFL players have reacted — along with a majority of Australians.

AFL clubs, the league, former Western Bulldogs champ Bob Murphy and Sydney Swans star Kieren Jack were among those to show their joy, while AFLW star Erin Phillips was among the first to take to social media, thanking Australians for the landmark decision.

“Can’t describe how much this means. THANK YOU AUSTRALIA!!!” Phillips wrote.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE: AUSTRALIA SAYS YES

In July Phillips, who lives in the US with wife Tracy Gahan and the couple’s twin children, told the Herald Sun she had been embarrassed to tell friends of Australia’s now-former laws on same-sex marriage.

“I kiss Tracy every day — goodbye, hello — in my daily routine. In Australia you do it and it’s on the front of every paper,” she said.

“People ask why we didn’t get married in Australia and when I tell them it’s illegal, they don’t believe me. They’re blown away. They see Australia as an advanced country.

“Hopefully, it changes soon for many couples in Australia. It is unfortunate.”

Earlier this year Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli used a speech at the AFLPA MVP awards to push the “yes” campaign, while teammate Easton Wood, and also Ben Brown and Jordan Roughead wore equality badges.
