Adelaide and Port Adelaide look set to have to travel to the Gold Coast and enter a hub ahead of Round 3 even if the State Government relaxes border restrictions prior to the AFL’s restart.

A Saturday night Showdown, a Power home game, is part of Round 2 of the resumed AFL season revealed on Monday.

The AFL has then scheduled the Crows and Power’s next three games in Queensland, when they are due to enter the Gold Coast hub.

The Crows will first take on Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium, then play Brisbane at the Gabba before “hosting” Fremantle at Metricon.

The Power will face the Dockers at Metricon, ‘host’ West Coast, also at Metricon, and play the Lions at the Gabba.

The Crows and Power were set to be in the Gold Coast this week for the resumption of contact training, only for SA health authorities to change their mind and give the two clubs elite athlete exemptions allowing them to stay in Adelaide.

This, and the Showdown in Round 2 being pushed by Premier Steven Marshall, had fuelled hope they may not even need to enter a hub but AFL fixtures boss Travis Auld said even if restrictions did wind back in SA it was likely the Crows and Power would still go to the Gold Coast.

“The plan at the moment is to certainly leave them in Queensland for that period,” he said.

“We need to create some certainty (in the fixtures) but what it does do though is they are only there for the four week period if the regulations change and we can schedule them back in their home state.”

The next batch of fixtures is set to be outlined after Round 3.

Auld said the AFL would wait to see what the restrictions were in SA.

Ideally we get at the end of this four week block and things progress and we have the ability at some point for these teams to get back and play in their own state,” he said.

“It is just unknown.

“We have received incredible support right around the country from State Governments and health officers in those states,

“We are in their hands, all I can say is that we are ready to adapt if things change really quickly.”

Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas said the playing group and entire club were just looking forward to getting back playing football and said having to go to Queensland would not phase them.

“We have a play anyone, anywhere attitude and if it requires us to play several games in Queensland in succession we’ll adapt to that,” he said.

“We see this block as a real opportunity for the team to build on their connection away from Adelaide as we’ve done so successfully with our pre-season camps in Queensland over the last couple of years.”
