Norwood’s Mitch Grigg goes back to back: Recap the 2018 SANFL Magarey Medal count

NORWOOD midfielder Mitch Grigg won back-to-back Magarey Medals during a glittering ceremony at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday night. See the final leaderboard here.

NORWOOD star Mitch Grigg has been honoured as the best and fairest player in the state league after claiming back-to-back Magarey Medals.

In recognition of his stunning influence in the Redlegs’ charge to the minor premiership, Grigg polled 26 votes to triumph by two from Central District rover Travis Schiller. It is three votes more than Grigg secured last year and he is the 20th player to secure multiple wins in the league’s most prestigious individual award. It is also the 16th successive year a midfielder has worn the Medal. Grigg, who is gearing up to take on Woodville-West Torrens in Sunday’s second semi-final, was given the maximum votes from the umpires in seven of the 18 games and after entering the count at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday night among the favourites, he was always the player to catch when he had an incredible 14 votes by round seven. The victory was sealed in the penultimate round when he earned one vote in the win over North Adelaide at The Parade. Schiller finished the season with five votes from the final two rounds. Woodville-West Torrens midfielder James Boyd and South Adelaide onballer Nick Liddle were two votes further back. https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/sa-footy-at-its-best-and-fairest/image-gallery/4dacf9c3b8c642177a0d692e9463c4a2 The win caps an amazing two years at the Redlegs following his delisting by the Crows at the end of the 2016 season, after 20 AFL games. Rather than let his release from the AFL system impact on his game, he has been a driving force at The Parade. Only Schiller had more possessions for the season and he averaged more than 28 a game. Grigg was also the Redlegs’ leading goalkicker with 28, which ranks him 10th in the competition. “Now I’m looking forward to the finals campaign,” he said. “There is a very similar feeing to when we won three in a row (2012-14). “I was part of one of those. I’ve got a lot of confidence in the boys.” The Redlegs will meet the Eagles in the second semi-final at Adelaide Oval on Sunday. Grigg joins an exclusive group of only seven players who have won the Medal in successive years. His game is built on his ability to win the hard ball and burst from packs, as the spark to many attacking raids for the Redlegs. RELIVE THE AMAZING NIGHT HERE
