Matthew Lloyd: Giants must play hardball with Dylan Shiel, Rory Lobb suitors

ESSENDON great Matthew Lloyd says GWS needs to drive a hard bargain for Dylan Shiel and Rory Lobb after a horror trade period was compounded by the loss of Tom Scully to Hawthorn at a bargain basement price.
Shiel is being courted by Essendon while Lobb is likely to head to Fremantle ahead of Wednesday night’s AFL trade deadline.
Question marks remain on Scully’s long-term future after he badly injured his ankle in the round two match against Collingwood, but the Giants got only a future fourth-round pick in return for the gut-running midfielder.
BLOCKBUSTER: COULD SCULLY DEAL BE TRIGGER?
DONE DEALS: EVERY COMPLETED AFL TRADE
“The Giants are digging in here (with Essendon on Shiel) and so would I,” Lloyd told Trade Radio.
“If the Giants are missing out with Scully they have to drive a hard bargain with Essendon. The Setterfield (deal with Carlton) was cheap so the Lobb and Shiel deals they have to dig in on. It might take till 8pm but get as much as you can for these two.”
The Giants have asked for two first round picks for Shiel, which would be this year’s pick nine and the Bombers’ first round selection in next year’s draft. It is the same compensation they received for Adam Treloar from Collingwood when he left at the end of 2015.
The Bombers have reportedly offered this year’s first-round and a future third-round selection for Shiel, which GWS have baulked at.
Port Adelaide champion Kane Cornes argued Shiel was not quite as threatening with the ball as Treloar but was still worth the two first round picks.
“Treloar is just a little more dangerous than Shiel,” Cornes said.
“(Jaeger) O’Meara went to Hawthorn for two first round picks and he hardly played (In his first year at the Hawks). Jake Lever went for two first rounders and Shiel is of equal value to Essendon as what Lever is to Melbourne.”
Lloyd and Cornes both believe GWS lost out on the Will Setterfield to Carlton trade.
The number seven pick went to the Blues for a future second-round pick and an exchange of third and fourth-round selections.
Scully played 121 games in his seven seasons at the Giants. He is widely regarded as the best runner in the AFL, having set a host of GPS records for distance covered in matches.
“It was a complex trade given the uncertainty around Tom’s ankle,” GWS List Manager Jason McCartney said.
“Tom’s been a valuable member of the Giants playing list both on and off the field since joining the club ahead of the 2012 season.
“We thank Tom for his contribution to building our football club and wish him all the best for the future.”
