West Adelaide coach Gavin Colville has demanded an elusive four-quarter effort from his charges as they look to build on their first win of the SANFL season.
The Bloods face in-form Glenelg at Richmond Oval on Anzac Day eve, just five days after downing Woodville-West Torrens to break their 2019 duck.
Colville said a weight had been lifted off his players, who snapped their 0-3 start to the campaign with the commanding 37-point victory over the Eagles last Friday.
But the mentor believed there was more to come from his side.
“To an extent, the season starts for us now,” said Colville, in his second-year at the helm at West.
“Our form in the first three games was OK, but certainly inconsistent.
“We had some really good moments and we’d been in winning positions for periods of each game.
“But we just hadn’t lasted and in all three games I thought we hadn’t finished a game off overly well.
“We got a much longer sustained effort against the Eagles, which helped us win that game.
“We’re getting closer to identifying not only some team balance, but also the way we want to play our footy.
“Hopefully we’ll continue to improve.”
West would be without midfielder Josh Schiller, who was expected to miss several games after injuring his shoulder against the Eagles.
Lachlan Evans would also sit out the Glenelg clash due to a hamstring problem, but was tipped to return for the Bloods’ next outing against South Adelaide on May 4.
Colville expected a stern examination from the third-ranked Tigers as Mark Stone’s team bid to extend its three-match unbeaten run.
“They’ve been coached really well,” Colville said.
“They’ve got great structure, a dangerous forward line and they’re just solid over the ground.
“They’ve got good balance and they certainly get a lot of drive out of their backline.
“Anzac Day adds a little bit of something special to it.
“Some of the qualities that are synonymous with Anzac Day you’d like to think are things you can have at your footy club as well.”
Aaron Joseph had been left out by the Bays, having sustaining a hamstring injury in last Friday’s success over Sturt.
