ADELAIDE PLAINS FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Two Wells 8.12 (60) d Mallala 6.7 (43)

Mail Medallist: Ethan Kwaterski (Hummocks Watchman Eagles/HWE)

Leading goalkicker: Caleb Edmead (Two Wells) – 70

Major ins: Daniel Kaipara (Modbury to Virginia), Tait Nottle (Blyth-Snowtown to HWE)

Major outs: Beau Shinnick (Angle Vale to Penola), Ethan Kwaterski (HWE to Angaston), Hudson Eeles (United to Athelstone)

Clubs: Angle Vale, Balaklava, Hamley Bridge, Hummocks/Watchman, Mallala, Two Wells, United, Virginia

Two Wells will be the big favourite in the Adelaide Plains FL again this season after claiming their third consecutive premiership in 2023.

The Roosters have retained a number of big guns ahead of their 2024 campaign including gun forward Caleb Edmead, star midfielder Luke Barnett and 2023 signing and SA country player Jakob Thomson.

Mallala will be strong contenders again this year while Angle Vale may and HWE have both lost star players in Beau Shinnick and Ethan Kwaterski.

United saw drastic improvement under new playing-coach Jarred Allmond last season but the loss of star utility Hudson Eeles to Athelstone may prove costly, while Virginia and Hamley Bridge also remain as unknowns after tough 2023 seasons.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Roosters claim fourth consecutive premiership

Two Wells has become a giant in the Adelaide Plains FL throughout recent seasons, winning three straight flags in 2021, 2022 and 2023 and will be a big favourite to come out on top in this year’s grand final.

With SA Country star Caleb Edmead remaining with the club for another year and players like Luke Barnett, Jakob Thomson and Dylan Wise all returning, the Roosters should go close to the feat of four straight.

Barnett claims another medal

Luke Barnett has remained at the top of his game since winning the Mail Medal in 2021 but hasn’t quite got over the line in voting, possibly due to his side’s wide spread of talent.

The star onballer can play a number of roles for his team and will be integral to any success it has again this year.

If the club is up the top in 2024, expect Barnett to poll well in the medal count.

United competes for finals

The club fell short last season, but United should head into another campaign under former WWTFC midfielder Jarred Allmond feeling confident about its finals chances.

Despite the loss of Eeles to Athelstone, the Tigers should be able to compete with most of the APFL competition and could upset to make the top four or finish just outside.

2. Mallala

3. Balaklava

4. HWE

BAROSSA, LIGHT AND GAWLER FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

2023 grand final: South Gawler 14.10 (94) d Nuriootpa 12.14 (86)

Mail Medallist: Steve Burton (South Gawler)

2023 leading goalkicker: Leigh Ryswyk (Barossa District) -55

Major ins: Isaya McKenzie (Adelaide to Willaston), Jack Carpenter (Central District to Barossa District), Rhys Cannizzaro (Central District to Nuriootpa)

Major outs: Aaron Laverty (Nuriootpa to Broughton Mundoora), Darren Shillabeer (Barossa District to Myponga-Sellicks), Joey Brown (Kapunda to Salisbury North), Kallum Brown (Kapunda to Salisbury North)

Clubs: Angaston, Barossa District, Freeling, Gawler Central, Kapunda, Nuriootpa, South Gawler, Tanunda, Willaston

Reigning premier South Gawler heads into the 2024 BLGFA season relatively unchanged, with star players such as Flynn Pisani, Patrick White, back-to-back Mail Medallist Steve Burton and grand final best on ground Lachlan Arnold all set to star for the Lions yet again.

Competition power Nuriootpa should also remain strong after playing in the last two grand finals against South Gawler, despite losing former premiership captain Aaron Laverty to the Northern Areas Football Association.

2023 preliminary finalist Barossa District will have to deal with the loss of star forward Darren Shillabeer to the GSFL this season but will still be competitive after adding former Central District SANFL league player Jack Carpenter, while Willaston may be set for a boost up the ladder with the full-time return of former Crows SANFL gun Isaya McKenzie.

Sam Colquhoun’s Tanunda side would be disappointed with missing the 2023 finals series after losing Zane Kirkwood but should be expected to challenge for a spot this season along with Angaston, while Gawler Central will also be around the mark after another more finals experience last year.

Star onballer Scott Dutschke and Freeling saw more improvement in 2023 by winning five games and should continue to progress this year, while Kapunda may struggle to move up from the bottom of the ladder after losing Joey and Kal Brown.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Colquhoun claims another medal

The former Port Adelaide and Sturt midfielder was dominant for Tanunda yet again last season but fell short of claiming the prize as South Gawler star Steve Burton won his second straight.

The Magpies playing-coach is arguably the competition’s most consistent player and should poll well if his side makes it back to the finals or comes close.

Lions go back-to-back

South Gawler looks to be the best poised for a premiership push again this season after retaining most of its star players.

Nuriootpa will again be major contenders but the return of Dean Cutting for a potential full season at the Lions should make them even harder to beat come finals time.

McKenzie boosts Willaston to prelim

The Donnybrooks have been craving a return to grand final contention and they could see just that in 2024 with former Crow Isaya McKenzie committing to the side for a full season.

The star midfielder and forward can take over a game almost single-handedly and should provide a major boost for his club, especially in big games.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. South Gawler

2. Nuriootpa

3. Willaston

4. Gawler Central

5. Barossa District

Arguably the best player in the BLGFA, Colquhoun has led brilliantly throughout his time with Tanunda.

STEVE BURTON

Dual BLGFA medallist Steve Burton will again be one to watch this season after a terrific 2023.

The gun midfielder should be his side’s important player this year as the Lions aim for another premiership.

EASTERN EYRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Ports 9.9 (63) d Ranges 6.17 (53)

Mail Medallist: Tyson Jenner (Ranges)

Leading goalkicker: Tasman Fitzgerald, Logan Elliott (Central Eyre United) – 38

Major ins: Jordan Clements (Marble Range to Kimba), Josh Seal (Tasman to Kimba), Matt Ramsey (Colonel Light Gardens to Kimba),

Clubs: Central Eyre United, Cowell, Kimba, Ports, Ranges

Kimba may have set itself up for a huge season after a brilliant pre-season period in player recruitment, signing Port Lincoln FL stars Jordan Clements and Josh Seal along with Colonel Light Gardens onballer Matt Ramsey.

Clements has been one of SA country footy’s top players in recent years and will join brothers Sam and Benji at the Tigers.

Aseri Raikiwasa’s Ports side should be favourites this season after retaining a number of star players from the 2023 premiership including young gun Cooper Llewelyn and important key forward Sid Masters, while midfielders Jack Kenny and Tyson Jenner will have Ranges ready to challenge again.

Central Eyre United will need strong production from leading goalkickers Tasman Fitzgerald and Logan Elliott again, while Cowell should improve on last year’s winless campaign but may find the task of moving up the ladder to big.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Clements leads Kimba to grand final appearance, wins Mail Medal

Jordan Clements should hit the ground running alongside his brothers and fellow Port Lincoln star Josh Seal at his new club.

The star midfielder does a bit of everything and could boost his side to premiership contention.

If the Tigers can tally some wins this season, Clements will be a strong contender for the Mail Medal.

Magpies win fourth straight

Ports have been on a tear in recent years, winning the 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2023 premierships in dominant fashion, with Kimba the only other outfit to win premierships during that run.

While the Magpies might be challenged by the Tigers, as well as Ranges, again this season, their side may simply be too strong to fall off.

Cats achieve multiple wins

With a number of players returning to Cowell this season including Brad Phillips and Peter Spurling, Cowell may benefit from some stability and continuity in 2024.

While 2023 was a season to forget for the club, the Cats should see improvement on the field in 2024.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Ports

2. Ranges

3. Kimba

4. Central Eyre United

5. Cowell

PLAYERS TO WATCH

COOPER LLEWELYN

(Ports)

One of the best players aged 21 and under in local SA footy last season, Llewelyn dominated as a midfielder and forward for the Magpies.

Tallying 30 goals and seven best player nods in 14 games through 2023, the former Mail Medallist should build off of his performance in 2024.

JACK KENNY

(Ranges)

A consistent star in the EEFL, Kenny was close to leading his Eastern Ranges side to a well-deserved flag last season but was pipped by a sensational Ports outfit.

The gun midfielder will undoubtedly be motivated by the loss this year and should remain one of the competition’s elite players.

JORDAN CLEMENTS

(Kimba)

A star of SA country footy in recent years, midfield workhorse Jordan Clements has made the move from Marble Range to Kimba.

Is capable of winning games off of his own boot and should dominate alongside his brothers for the Tigers.

FAR NORTH FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Miners 10.5 (65) d Hornridge 5.10 (40)

Mail Medallist: Jack Sires (Miners)

Leading goalkicker: Andrew Miller (Hornridge) – 38

Clubs: East Roxby, Hornridge, Miners, Olympic Dam

Miners head into season 2024 having retained Mail Medallist and former Sacred Heart OC player Jack Sires and should be a strong chance to make the big dance again.

The club will undoubtedly face another challenge from Hornridge after the Magpies retained most of their list including names such as star captain Jack Rigden and midfielder Kallan Head, while Olympic Dam should be in the mix again with players like midfielder Brad Hoepner and former SA Country representative Levi Konitzka.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Miners go back-to-back

Miners will be well set-up to push for the FNFL premiership again this season with a number of important players including the reigning Mail Medallist returning.

If they can get to the grand final they should be a major chance after last season’s taste of success.

Rigden wins Mail Medal

Jack Rigden produced one of his best seasons for Hornridge in 2023 and should star again this year as he looks to captain the Magpies to a premiership.

Will poll well in the medal count if his side wins enough games.

Devils make big dance

Olympic Dam missed out on the opportunity to win back-to-back flags last season after falling to Miners in the preliminary final but should be confident of making a return to the biggest game of the year in 2024.

The Devils definitely have the cattle to go all the way this season and should be one of the favourites come September.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Hornridge

2. Miners

3. Olympic Dam

4. East Roxby

PLAYERS TO WATCH

JACK RIGDEN

(Hornridge)

Runner-up to Sires in last season’s Mail Medal, Rigden has emerged as a star leader at Hornridge.

Can play anywhere around the ground for his side and always distributes efficiently.

Sires proved to be the difference for Miners after arriving from Sacred Heart OC last season and can be the boost his team needs again this year.

A talented player who wins plenty of the ball and sets his teammates up seamlessly.

GREAT FLINDERS FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: United Yeelanna 15.15 (105) d Tumby Bay 11.7 (73)

Mail Medallist: Brayden Martin (United Yeelanna)

Leading goalkicker: Matthew Crettenden (United Yeelanna) – 81

Major ins: Harlee Chandler (Western United to Cummins Rambler), Jackson Murphy (Angaston to Tumby Bay), Macauley Glover (Norwood to Lock)

Major outs: Cain Reynolds (Lock to Dunsborough), Charlie Gibson (Elliston Districts to Ardrossan), Chris Wright (Cummins Kapinnie to Westminster OS), Ethan Pugsley (Eyre United to Norwood), Ezra Foster (Tumby Bay to Norwood), Hudson Franks (Tumby Bay to Flinders Park), Tom Gibson (Elliston Districts to Ardrossan), Ziek Kay (Lock to Southern Flinders)

Clubs: Cummins Kapinnie, Elliston Districts, Eyre United, Lock, Cummins Rambler, Tumby Bay, United Yeelanna

There has been plenty of player movement in and out of the GFFL for season 2024, with SA country superstar and state player Harlee Chandler headlining the recruits.

A dominant young gun through the midfield and up front, Chandler should provide a major boost for Cummins Rambler after last season’s fourth place finish.

Lock will be led by versatile champion Kory Beard again this year and has recruited Norwood reserves regular Macauley Glover after losing Cain Reynolds and Ziek Kay.

Elliston Districts will need to rebound from the loss of Charlie and Tom Gibson to Ardrossan and may just miss finals, while Tumby Bay should challenge again despite the losses of Ezra Foster and Hudson Franks after signing Angaston gun Jackson Murphy.

United Yeelanna will again be tough for anyone to stop, the Eagles fresh off of their fifth consecutive flag and retaining the services of gun forward Matt Crettenden, while Cummins Kapinnie and Eyre United have both lost important players and may struggle to move up from the bottom of the ladder.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Chandler leads Magpies to big dance

A representative of the SA country state team which took on WA last season, Chandler produced a massive year for Western United to boot 41 goals from 14 games.

A strong and athletic young midfield/forward utility, Chandler has the talent to lead Cummins Rambler on a big run which could very well place them in the grand final.

Beard beats out competition for Mail Medal

One of the best players in SA country footy right now, Beard returned to his hometown club of Lock last season and was completely dominant throughout his 10 games.

The versatile gun can play anywhere around the ground and tallied 19 goals and eight best player nods in his 10 appearances.

Should poll well in the medal count this season if he plays enough games.

Crettenden boots tonne, leads Eagles to sixth straight

They will face tougher competition from Lock, Tumby Bay and Cummins Ramblers this season but United Yeelanna will be the hot favourite for the premiership again as long as star key forward Matt Crettenden plays.

A smart player who leads well, takes strong marks and can finish from anywhere, Crettenden booted 81 goals in just 10 games last season and should eclipse the 100-mark this year.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. United Yeelanna

2. Cummins Ramblers

3. Lock

4. Tumby Bay

5. Elliston Districts

6. Cummins Kapinnie

7. Eyre United

Arguably the best player in SA country footy right now, Beard can play as a ruck, key defender, key forward or midfielder.

One of the toughest players to stop, the former Sturt star should dominate again this season.

MATTHEW CRETTENDEN

(United Yeelanna)

Averaged eight goals a game last season while leading United Yeelanna to yet another premiership and should again prove too difficult for most defenders to keep quiet this year.

GREAT SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: McLaren 12.12 (84) d Willunga 8.9 (57)

Mail Medallist: Jesse McKinnon (Victor Harbor)

Leading goalkicker: Ben Simounds (Strathalbyn) – 71

Major ins: Bryce Gibbs (Victor Harbor), Ben Heaslip (South Adelaide to Victor Harbor), Henry Bruce (Kadina to Langhorne Creek), Mitch Wilkins (Norwood to Myponga-Sellicks)

Major outs: James Hargreaves (Yankalilla to Coorong), Jordan Hooper (Mount Compass to Padthaway), Mason Middleton (Encounter Bay to Barmera-Monash), Reece Slape (Goolwa/Pt Elliot to Echunga), Riley Clamp (Strathalbyn to Hahndorf)

Clubs: Encounter Bay, Goolwa/Pt Elliot, Langhorne Creek, McLaren, Mount Compass, Myponga/Sellicks, Strathalbyn, Victor Harbor, Willunga, Yankalilla

GSFL superstar Brett Ellis and McLaren head into the 2024 season aiming for three premierships in a row but a number of clubs have strengthened, including Victor Harbor which has notably added former AFL star and Magarey Medallist Bryce Gibbs along with Ben Heaslip.

McLaren celebrates a second straight GSFL flag. Picture: Great Southern Football League

The Roos, who will be led by Gibbs and reigning Mail Medallist Jesse McKinnon, should be among the favourites to go all the way after falling short by a kick to eventual grand finalist Willunga in 2023 finals.

The Demons have retained a number of stars including former AFL premiership midfielder Jack Redden and should remain a major chance of making its third straight grand final, while Myponga-Sellicks will also be around the mark having added former Norwood player Mitch Wilkins to a line-up which includes star brothers Ben and Sam Kennedy.

Kadina champion Henry Bruce has joined Langhorne Creek for 2024 as the Hawks retool after missing finals, while Mount Compass and Strathalbyn will have to deal with key losses of Jordan Hooper and Riley Clamp respectively.

Encounter Bay has lost former West Adelaide player Mason Middleton to the Riverland, while Goolwa/Port Elliot and Yankalilla could both be set to struggle after star players Reece Slape and James Hargreaves departed to the Hills and River Murray.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Gibbs grabs medal honours

Victor Harbor could be set to claim its second straight Mail Medal after former South Adelaide mid Jesse McKinnon won the count last year, but it could be another former Panther who claims the award in 2024.

Bryce Gibbs’ decision to join Victor Harbor is one which could send completely change the competition and if the star onballer and backman can dominate from the jump and lead the Roos to the top, he’ll be a big chance to take out the league best and fairest.

Victor Harbor storms to flag

The additions of Gibbs and Heaslip to a side which already includes big names such as forward Sam Overall and gun midfielder Jesse McKinnon should instantly make the Kangaroos a premiership contender.

Combine the list with a healthy dose of 2023 finals experience, the club could be on the cusp of something special in 2023.

Strathalbyn struggles, Hawks make finals

Strathalbyn heads into the season having lost arguably its best player in Riley Clamp, the Crows SANFL player joining Hahndorf after a big 2023.

With Mount Compass also losing the Hoopers after finishing fifth last season, it may be time for Langhorne Creek to take advantage and jump into the finals frame.

The Hawks have retained a number of key players and should receive a boost from the arrival of former Kadina star Henry Bruce.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Victor Harbor

2. McLaren

3. Willunga

4. Myponga-Sellicks

5. Langhorne Creek

6. Mount Compass

Former Collingwood and Melbourne forward/midfield utility Ben Kennedy has consistently been a top player of the competition.

Skilled and clean in the contest with the ability to take big grabs and kick important goals, Kennedy will need to perform at his best again if the Mudlarks are to challenge for a flag.

BRYCE GIBBS

(Victor Harbor)

The former Carlton, Crows and South Adelaide gun should instantly be one of the top players in the GSFL competition.

JACK REDDEN

(Willunga)

The West Coast premiership midfielder was a standout of the competition after joining Willunga last season, leading the Demons to another grand final.

Strong and efficient on the footy and courageous in the contest, Redden could provide the edge his club needs to go all the way in 2024.

HILLS DIVISION ONE

2023 grand final: Nairne Bremer 12.16 (88) d Hahndorf 11.10 (76)

Mail Medallist: Brock Knott (Nairne Bremer)

2023 leading goalkicker: Darcy Hourigan (Nairne Bremer) – 115

Major ins: Brett Turner (Glenelg to Echunga), Reece Slape (Goolwa/Pt Elliot to Echunga), Riley Clamp (Strathalbyn to Hahndorf), Matt Tuck (Edwardstown to Blackwood), Will Carter (St Peter’s OC to Onkaparinga Valley), Nathan Dunn (Edwardstown to Blackwood), Frank Timpano (Pooraka to Uraidla Districts)

Major outs: Cody Szust (Port Adelaide/Lobethal to Rambler), Luke Thomas (Uraidla Districts to Barmera-Monash)

Clubs: Blackwood, Echunga, Hahndorf, Lobethal, Mount Barker, Mount Lofty, Nairne Bremer, Onkaparinga Valley, Uraidla Districts

The Hills Football League will have a bye each week this season after the collapse of a potential merger between Ironbank-Cherry Gardens and Bridgewater-Callington and the departure of the former to the Southern Football League.

Nairne Bremer heads into the season relatively unchanged after its upset premiership win over Hahndorf in 2023 and should be one of the favourites again this year, while the Magpies have recruited multiple players including former Strathalbyn and Crows forward Riley Clamp.

Nairne Bremer sings the song after its HFL div one flag. Picture: Nairne Bremer Football Club

Onkaparinga Valley has added rising St Peter’s youngster Will Carter to their list a year after luring Jesse O’Brien away from Saints, while North Adelaide youngster Shaun Bennier has joined Mount Lofty.

Mount Barker should also improve this season, with rising SA country superstar Sam Callins returning for another campaign with the Roos, while Echunga could be the major improver after landing former Glenelg and Crows midfielder Brett Turner as well as gun defender Reece Slape.

Uraidla Districts will remain a strong contender after signing Pooraka gun Frank Timpano and Blackwood could also be around the finals mark after the return of star mid Matt Tuck.

While Lobethal has been a dominant outfit through a number of years in the HFL, it is hard to see the Tiger competing this season.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Echunga makes finals

2024 could be a remarkable year for Echunga, the club set to improve significantly on its ninth-spot finish in 2023 after adding Brett Turner and Reece Slape to support star midfielder Matt Raitt.

If the new additions can fire, the club could very well make the top five.

Hahndorf bounces back to win flag

Hahndorf went through the entire 2023 minor round undefeated but fell short to Nairne Bremer in the grand final and will be eager to bounce back in 2024.

The addition of Riley Clamp should see Matt Golding’s Magpies fly again this year and they will remain tough for any side to top as they launch another premiership bid.

Hourigan hits 100-mark again

The key Nairne Bremer forward booted a huge 115 goals last year and with the Rams set to compete again after a remarkable premiership in 2023, don’t be surprised if Hourigan kicks the tonne for a second consecutive season.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Hahndorf

2. Nairne Bremer

3. Uraidla Districts

4. Mount Lofty

5. Echunga

6. Mount Barker

With Uraidla Districts adding more help for Terlich, expect the star veteran to lead his team to grand final contention.

SAM CALLINS

(Mount Barker)

An emerging superstar of SA country footy, Callins produced another great season for the Roos in 2023 after winning the Mail Medal in 2022.

Callins is a skilled and composed midfielder with a great footy IQ and should have his club competing for finals again.

HILLS DIVISION TWO

2023 grand final: Gumeracha 6.5 (41) d Meadows 5.5 (35)

Mail Medallist: Sam Hanna (Gumeracha)

2023 leading goalkicker: Michael Walters (Gumeracha) – 43

Major ins: Brett Ancel (Payneham Norwood Union to Birdwood), Dylan Weaver (Central District to Gumeracha)

Major outs: Duane Schultz (Gumeracha to Pooraka)

Clubs: Birdwood, Gumeracha, Kangarilla, Kersbrook, Macclesfield, Meadows, Torrens Valley

Gumeracha will enter the 2024 season gunning for a third consecutive premiership and the Magpies should be the heavy favourites again after adding former Central District defender Dylan Weaver to their list.

The club will face yet another big challenge from Meadows this year after the Bulldogs retained a number of star players including brothers Matt and Jake Spencely, who dominated the competition after joining from Waikerie last season.

Macclesfield and Kangarilla head into the season relatively unchanged and should compete to go deep in finals again, while Torrens Valley and Kersbrook have also retained the majority of their lists.

While Gumeracha and Meadows look set to meet in the big dance again, Birdwood may be one of the big surprises of the 2024 season, the club recruiting a number of players from other competitions after finishing bottom in 2023 including former Payneham Norwood Union star Brett Ancel.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Hanna wins fourth straight medal

Who can stop Gumeracha’s Sam Hanna this year?

It has been one of the questions on every Hills FL fan’s lips in recent seasons, the former Central District midfielder dominating the competition for Gumeracha to win three straight Mail Medals from 2021-2023.

After another stunning display in 2023 which included back-to-back flags for the Magpies, expect Hanna to be a force through the middle and around the ground again this year.

Magpies win third in a row

After winning its first back-to-back premiership since 1957, Gumeracha will attempt to make history this season to win its third straight HFL Country Division crown.

The club has retained many of its star players including Sam and Ben Hanna, and with Dylan Weaver now added to the line up the Magpies may be too hard to stop.

Spencely boots 50, leads goalkicking

Former Adelaide SANFL player Matt Spencely starred for Meadows last season, using his elite skill and goalkicking craft to damage opposition through the midfield and up front.

While the local gun booted 40 for the Bulldogs last season, it would come as no surprise if he spent a bit more time in the forwardline this year and hit the scoreboard to greater effect.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Gumeracha

2. Meadows

3. Birdwood

4. Macclesfield

5. Kangarilla

6. Torrens Valley

7. Kersbrook

PLAYERS TO WATCH

(Gumeracha)

Winning his third straight Mail Medal in 2023, Hanna has become one of the Hills Country Division’s biggest draw cards in recent years.

The former Central District player can fill a number of roles on, behind or ahead of the ball for the Magpies and plays his best footy in the biggest games.

KANGAROO ISLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Kingscote 11.13 (79) d Western Districts 10.7 (67)

Mail Medallist: Tate Barrett (Western Districts)

Leading goalkicker: Lleyton Hedges (Western Districts) – 72

Major ins: Keenan Jacobs (Naracoorte to Dudley United), Sam Wilson (Naracoorte to Dudley United)

Major outs: Hamish Hartlett

Clubs: Dudley United, Kingscote, Western Districts, Wisanger, Parndana

Kingscote managed to top 2022 premier Western Districts in last season’s KIFL grand final, with Hamish Hartlett dominating in what was one of his four appearances for the club in 2023.

The Hounds will likely be without Hartlett this season however and may fall back behind Western Districts as a result, with Mail Medallist Tate Barrett set to return for the Saints.

Wisanger should also launch a strong premiership bid in 2024 with star players Dusty Cross and Liam Sampson going around again, while Dudley United has recruited brilliantly by bringing in former Naracoorte captain Keenan Jacobs and forward Sam Wilson.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Saints respond to claim flag

Western Districts will be eager to right their wrongs after last season’s grand final disappointment against Kingscote and the Saints are well-prepared for another premiership push.

If Tate Barrett can fire again, Western Districts will be tough to stop.

Sampson wins Mail Medal

Liam Sampson had a strong year for Wisanger last season after winning the Mail Medal in 2022 and should be a major chance again in 2024.

The Panthers gun is a skilled onballer who can do it all and should poll well.

Eagles make prelim

Dudley United was knocked out of finals comfortably by Kingscote last season but some key additions could see the team make some noise in 2024.

The club has added two country footy stars with winning experience in Keenan Jacobs and Sam Wilson and should mature in big games as a result.

Barrett boasts impressive athleticism and strength in the contest.

LIAM SAMPSON

A star onballer who can do it all from winning his own footy and dealing to teammates with precision to taking big grabs or setting his teammates up in front of goal.

KOWREE NARACOORTE TATIARA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Border Districts 10.13 (73) d Kingston 8.8 (56)

Mail Medallist: Daniel Bibby (Keith), Josh Gregg (Naracoorte), Zac Richards (Border Districts)

Leading goalkicker: Zac Peake (Naracoorte) – 66

Major ins: Aaron Young (North Adelaide to Keith), Andrew Bradley (Prince Alfred OC to Kybybolite), Beau Shinnick (Angle Vale to Penola), Cameron Craig (North Adelaide to Keith), Danny Juckers (Willunga to Padthaway), Harrison Gunther (South Adelaide to Bordertown), Jack Trengove (Prince Alfred OC to Kybybolite), Jaidan Kappler (Noarlunga to Bordertown), Jay Schulz (Old Launcestonians to Lucindale), Jordan Hooper (Mount Compass to Padthaway), Mackenzie Slee (Prince Alfred OC to Kingston), Shane Heatley (Mount Compass to Padthaway), Tom Logan (Lucindale)

Major outs: Daniel Menzel (Padthaway to Coorong), Darcy Boyanton (Padthaway to Pulteney), Josh Gregg (Naracoorte to Ouyen), Keenan Jacobs (Naracoorte to Dudley United), Nathan Davey (Naracoorte to Mypolonga), Rory Taggert (Naracoorte to Mypolonga), Tarquin Brown (Padthaway to Victor Harbor), Will Rivers (Padthaway to Brighton), Zac Peake (Naracoorte to Plympton)

Clubs: Border Districts, Bordertown, Keith, Kingston, Kybybolite, Lucindale, Mundulla, Naracoorte, Padthaway, Penola

The KNTFL has had some of the biggest player signings in local SA footy for season 2024, with Magarey Medallist Aaron Young and star defender Cameron Craig leaving North Adelaide for Keith and former AFL captain Jack Trengove and SANFL captain Andrew Bradley joining hometown club Kybybolite after a division one AdFL flag last season.

Border Districts should be near the top again this season after retaining most of its 2023 premiership list, but Keith should go in as hot favourite after adding Young and Craig to an already strong list.

Padthaway has a relatively new-look side for 2024 after losing Daniel Menzel, Darcy Boyanton, Tarquin Brown and Will Rivers and adding Jordan Hooper and Shane Heatley from Mount Compass as well as Danny Juckers from Willunga, while Bordertown has also been active in player movements, bringing in South Adelaide player Harrison Gunther and former Crows SANFL player Jaidan Kappler.

Mundulla will be one of the forces of the competition again after re-signing star players James Hinge, Nick Mosey and Nathan Studham among others.

Kingston will be around the finals mark again after holding on to players like gun midfielders Jack Harding and Ben Warner and adding PAOC gun Mackenzie Slee.

Penola may be one of the big improvers next to Kybybolite this season, with star playing-coach Jayden Eldridge bringing in Adelaide Plains FL superstar Beau Shinnick, while Naracoorte can expect to drop off from contention after losing Nathan Davey and Rory Taggert to Mypolonga, Sam Willson and Keenan Jacobs to Dudley United, Mail Medallist Josh Gregg to Ouyen and forward Zac Peake to Plympton.

Lucindale might also leave the bottom of the ladder in 2024 after signing former Port Adelaide players Jay Schulz and Tom Logan.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Crows fly to flag

Superstar forward Lewis Hender will player-coach Keith again this season and he has added two former North Adelaide teammates ahead of the club’s 2024 campaign.

Aaron Young and Cameron Craig’s inclusions to a Crows side which already boasts name like Hender and Mail Medallist Daniel Bibby make the outfit significantly stronger and should instantly boost the club to premiership contention.

Trengove claims Mail Medal

Former Melbourne captain and Prince Alfred OC superstar Jack Trengove made the decision to return to his hometown club in Kybybolite alongside Andrew Bradley for season 2024.

Voted local SA footy’s top player in 2023 by The Advertiser readers, Trengove is one of the most skilled players in the state and has no issue dominating from the midfield.

If the Tigers improve in the win column, Trengove will pull plenty of votes in the medal count.

Naracoorte bottoms out

The Demons have seen a max exodus after failing to go deep in finals last season, with major names like Nathan Davey, Rory Taggert, Sam Willson, Keenan Jacobs, Zac Peake and reigning Mail Medallist Josh Gregg all leaving the club.

While the side still has some talent, it may see itself bomb right down to the bottom of the ladder as a result of its departures.

Is a workhorse around the ground who wins plenty of contested footy, is crafty with his disposal and can boot important goals.

If he and Bradley can fire, Kyby can make finals.

ZAC RICHARDS

(Border Districts)

Border Districts’ most important player during the club’s premiership-winning 2023 season, Richards was one of three deserved Mail Medal winners.

Able to play around the ground for his side, Richards is a ball magnet who can either set up his teammates or create opportunities for himself in front of goal.

LIMESTONE COAST FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Millicent 5.10 (40) d North Gambier 4.3 (27)

Mail Medal: Daron McElroy (West Gambier)

Leading goalkicker: Sam Stafford (North Gambier) – 47

Major ins: Callum Currie (Casterton Sandford), Jaden Grosser (Ardrossan to Millicent)

Major outs: Clint Gallio (Millicent to Mount Burr), Michael Krieger (Casterton Sandford to Kalangadoo), Sam Waring (Millicent to Hatherleigh), Todd Lewis (West Gambier to Kenilworth)

Clubs: Casterton Sandford, East Gambier, Millicent, North Gambier, South Gambier, West Gambier

Reigning premier Millicent has lost longtime star midfielder Clint Gallio to Mount Burr and gun ruck utility Sam Waring to Hatherleigh but has acquired the services of 2023 Ardrossan best and fairest Jaden Grosser as it sets up to challenge for a fourth consecutive Limestone Coast Football League (formerly Western Border Football League) flag.

The Saints will be challenged by West Gambier again this season after the Kangaroos retained star playing-coach and reigning league medallist Daron McElroy, who is coming off of a spectacular 2023 campaign in the ruck and up front.

Casterton Sandford suffered a major blow in the off-season when it lost superstar midfield/forward utility Michael Krieger who decided to return to Kalangadoo after a year with the Cats, and has brought in former VFL player Callum Currie to fill the hole.

Star North Gambier captain Nick McInerney will return with a similar side to last season as the Tigers aim to launch a proper premiership bid, while Sam McTaggart, Brayden Kain, Taylor Saffin and other star names will all go again with South Gambier.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Saints march to fourth straight

The same question will be on every LCFL fan’s mind entering the 2024 season – who can stop Millicent?

The Saints lost Clint Gallio and Sam Waring but the acquisition of Jaden Grosser should soften the blow of those departures and keep the club on top of the competition.

Kain leads South Gambier to prelim appearance

Star South Gambier utility Brayden Kain stood out as a leader of a young Demons side last season and the club should draw on the experience gained in 2023 during the 2024 season.

If Kain can play to his usual standards up front and through the contest and receive support from the up and coming young guns in his side there could be some upset results in favour of the demons in 2024.

McElroy claims two straight medals

Daron McElroy was at his best for West Gambier last season, dominating up front and in the ruck.

A long time superstar of South East footy, McElroy will be right among the top vote-getters in this year’s medal count if the Roos win a good amount of games.

PREDICTED LADDER

MID SOUTH EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Kalangadoo 10.10 (70) d Hatherleigh 10.4 (64)

Mail Medal: Josh Woodall (Port MacDonnell)

Leading goalkicker: Jack Gregory (Mount Burr) – 65

Major ins: Clint Gallio (Millicent to Mount Burr), Jed Jarrett (Bordertown to Robe), Jet Attard (Kongorong to Port MacDonnell), Michael Krieger (Casterton Sandford to Kalangadoo), Sam Waring (Millicent to Hatherleigh)

Major outs: Wade Chant (Port MacDonnell to Prince Alfred OC)

Clubs: Glencoe, Hatherleigh, Kalangadoo, Kongorong, Mount Burr, Nangwarry, Port MacDonnell, Robe, Tantanoola

Kalangadoo has strengthened after winning the 2023 MSEFL premiership, orchestrating the return of former club superstar Michael Krieger, who booted 92 goals in 17 games during his last season with the Magpies.

Hatherleigh has also improved on paper after losing last year’s grand final, adding Millicent big man utility Sam Waring, while Robe should also stay in touch with the top of the ladder after signing Bordertown onballer Jed Jarrett.

Port MacDonnell would still like its chances this year despite losing Wade Chant to the Adelaide Footy League after an underwhelming finals series, with long time stars Josh Woodall, Tom MacDonald and Tim Sullivan all returning to the club.

Clint Gallio has joined Mt Burr as playing-coach in a major move in South East footy and will be joined by fellow recruits Jake Whitty (Kongorong), Taylor Redden (West Gambier) and Tyler Richardson (Kongorong) – which may result in a major improvement by the club.

While it has not signed any major names, Glencoe has been busy in off-season recruitment and bolstered its list with potential, while Nangwarry, Tantanoola and Kongorong have also added multiple fresh faces ahead of what should be another challenging season.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Demons pip Magpies in grand final upset

While Kalangadoo will likely be the early favourite this season after bringing back Krieger, Port MacDonnell may very well be motivated by last season’s finals disappointment.

The Demons still possess a supremely talented list and if they can start clicking at the pointy end of the season they will be tough for anyone to beat.

Gallio coaches Mozzies to finals win

Millicent champion will undoubtedly provide a major boost for Mount Burr as playing-coach this season and if the Mozzies can make finals, look for the star midfielder to hit another gear.

The club has been crying out for more premiership experience and Gallio brings that in bunches after consecutive flags in the LCFL.

Krieger wins league medal

Michael Krieger’s return to Kalangadoo is of huge significance for the club and competition, with the South East star possessing the ability to dominate games on the ball or boot nearly 100 goals in a season up front.

Kalangadoo should tally more than enough wins for Krieger to poll a high amount of votes in the Mail Medal count.

TOM MACDONALD

(Port MacDonnell)

A legend of South East footy, MacDonald has three Mail Medals to his name for good reason.

Is a star veteran onballer who can win plenty of his own footy and distribute to teammates while under pressure with ease.

MURRAY VALLEY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Sedan-Cambrai 13.13 (91) d Browns-Well 8.5 (53)

Mail Medallist: Jacob Grieger (Sedan-Cambrai)

Leading goalkicker: Nathan Wright-bramfit (Murrayville) – 50

Major ins: Ben Durrant (Mawson Lakes to Ramco), Nathan Birch (SMOSH West Lakes to Ramco)

Clubs: Blanchetown-Swan Reach, Browns-Well, Murrayville, Paringa, Ramco, Sedan-Cambrai, Wunkar

Sedan-Cambrai was completely dominant yet again in 2023, coasting to an undefeated premiership season behind the fantastic play of onballer Jacob Grieger and the Magpies should be too tough to beat again in 2024.

Ramco has strengthened after its fourth spot finish last season and will attempt to leapfrog Murrayville and Browns-Well on the ladder, but both contenders look set to win plenty of games again this year after retaining the majority of their 2023 squads.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Grieger grabs second medal

In career-best form and returning to the Magpies again this season, Grieger will be a huge chance for another Mail Medal.

The Sedan-Cambrai star can perform through the middle and in a number of other roles around the ground and should rack up votes with ease.

Magpies fly to second straight

With superstar forward Cam Thompson (49 goals in 2023) and Grieger both returning to the club, it is hard to fathom Sedan-Cambrai doing anything other than winning a second consecutive flag.

Barring an upset, the Magpies should reach the achievement.

Ramco makes prelim

The Roosters upset Murrayville in the finals last season and they could very well do so again in season 2024 after adding multiple names to their list and retaining the likes of Jack Moxham and Jack Parfitt.

Joining Sedan-Cambrai from Berri after the 2022 season, Grieger has been monumental in his side’s midfield and forwardline.

A tireless player who provides an option in the contest or ahead of the ball all day, Grieger is one of the best users of the footy in the MVFL and has no issue slotting a goal.

JACK KELTON

(Browns-Well)

A tough contributor in the ruck and at the back, Kelton fights hard for possession and applies strong tackle pressure.

NORTHERN AREAS FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

2023 grand final: Orroroo 8.8 (56) d BMW 6.14 (50)

Mail Medallist: Will Combe (Crystal Brook)

Leading goalkicker: Samuel Dyer (Broughton-Mundoora) – 53

Major ins: Ben Geytenbeek (RSMU to Broughton-Mundoora), Ziek Kay (Lock to Southern Flinders)

Major outs: Marshall Mieglich (Broughton-Mundoora to Port)

Clubs: Booleroo Melrose Wilmington (BMW), Broughton-Mundoora, Crystal Brook, Jamestown-Peterborough, Orroroo, Southern Flinders

Orroroo pulled off one of the biggest upsets in local SA footy history last season to come from fourth with a 7-9 record to defeat 15-1 minor premier BMW but all signs point to the Lions making another charge at the big dance in 2024 after their 2023 let down.

SA country footy great Will Combe will go around again for Crystal Brook after dominating through the middle in 2023 to take out the Mail Medal, with fellow star onballer Luke Kapitola also pencilled in for a 2024 return.

Broughton-Mundoora should also be in the mix for a flag again with gun full forward Ben Geytenbeek joining Kallis Freer at the Eagles after a 49-goal North Eastern Football League season with Riverton Saddleworth Marrabel United.

Southern Flinders standouts Scott Combe and Shane Ballantyne have remained with the Tigers this year after a disappointing bottom finish last season, while Jamestown-Peterborough has also retained most of its list as it aims to improve on last year’s four-point effort.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Roosters top Lions for ultimate prize

With names like Will Combe, Luke Kapitola and star forward Leo Coates all returning for Crystal Brook this year, the club should be a legit premiership contender.

Expect the Roosters to tally plenty of wins during the season to cement a top two spot yet again and come up big in finals after last season’s disappointing exit.

Geytenbeek leads all forwards

Star SA country forward Ben Geytenbeek proved he still has what it takes to be a top goalkicker last NEFL season and he should do the same again in the NAFA.

With Broughton-Mundoora gun Kallis Freer giving him elite service, the big key target should have no trouble hitting the scoreboard.

Southern Flinders avoids wooden spoon

The Tigers produced an underwhelming 2023 season by any stretch of the imagination but should bounce back after retaining some of the competition’s top players in Ballantyne and Flowers.

It would come as no surprise if the club learnt from last season’s disappointment and used it as motivation for a solid season 2024.

Combe has been a star for hometown club Crystal Brook since returning after a strong career with North Adelaide in the SANFL.

The gun onballer was part of the 2022 SANFL Advertiser Team of the Year and has continued his form since at local level, hunting the ball in the contest to either set up teammates with precise ball-use or hit the scoreboard himself.

NORTH EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: BSR 10.15 (75) d Eudunda-Robertstown 4.7 (31)

Mail Medallist: Alex Morgan (BSR)

Leading goalkicker: Ben Geytenbeek (RSMU) – 49

Major ins: Harry Williams (North Adelaide to South Clare), Mack Bowman (North Adelaide to South Clare)

Major outs: Alex Morgan (BSR to West Adelaide), Ben Geytenbeek (RSMU to Broughton-Mundoora), Tait Nottle (Blyth-Snowtown to HWE)

Clubs: Blyth-Snowtown, Brinkworth Spalding Redhill (BSR), Burra Booborowie Hallett (BBH), Eudunda-Robertstown, Mintaro-Manoora, North Clare, Riverton Saddleworth Marrabel United (RSMU), South Clare

BSR won its fourth consecutive premiership in dominant fashion last season but will be without Mail Medallist midfield/forward utility Alex Morgan in 2024 after his move to West Adelaide, possibly opening the door for other clubs.

Eudunda-Robertstown will be hoping for another strong year behind the leadership of former West Adelaide captain Chris Schmidt, his brother Nick and captain Zac Green, while key position star Charlie Riggs and his Mintaro-Manoora side should be galvanised by their prelim final defeat to the Saints.

RSMU may be set to drop down the ladder after losing important key forward Ben Geytenbeek to the NAFA, which could give teams like North Clare, BBH and even South Clare, who have signed Harry Williams and Mack Bowman from the SANFL a shot at moving up the ladder after last season.

Blyth-Snowtown will play 2024 without superstar Tait Nottle after his move to the Adelaide Plains and will struggle to avoid another wooden spoon.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Saints march to premiership

Star players Tyson Launer, Chris and Nick Schmidt and Zac Green are all set to pull on the red, white and black for Eudunda-Robertstown again this year and with BSR losing superstar Alex Morgan to the SANFL it will be the opportune time for the club to chase a maiden premiership.

If the side can finish in the top two and secure a home final they will be tough to go past for the flag.

Eagles make the big dance

Mintaro-Manoora will be led by Charlie Riggs, star midfielder Will Sandow and standout forward Brok Schubert again this season and should be one of the toughest sides to beat in the competition.

They will undoubtedly put a strong run together in September.

RSMU drops from finals

The loss of star forward Ben Geytenbeek may be too much for the Hawks to overcome this season, with the club’s next best goalkicker for 2023 being Martin Rohde with 12.

If the side can’t replace Geytenbeek adequately, they could be looking at a challenging 2024.

TYSON LAUNER

A contested beast who can also move behind the ball and have a major impact, Launer has been a star for the Saints this NEFL season.

A tireless player for his side, Launer wins plenty of his own footy and can find teammates with ease by hand or foot.

PORT LINCOLN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Lincoln South 10.8 (68) d Marble Range 8.15 (63)

Mail Medallist: Michael Mazey (Lincoln South)

Leading goalkicker: Johann Wagner (Lincoln South) – 48

Major ins: Ben Jarvis (Norwood to Lincoln South), Casey Amos (South Augusta to Boston),

Major outs: Jordan Clements (Marble Range to Kimba), Josh Seal (Tasman to Kimba)

Lincoln South ended a 20-year premiership drought by defeating hot favourite Marble Range by a kick at the death last season and could be set for another strong premiership push after recruiting former Norwood star and Geelong draftee Ben Jarvis to join the likes of Johann Wagner and Michael Mazey.

Marble Range should remain strong but has lost star midfielder Jordan Clements as he joins his brothers at Kimba, meaning the club may look for continued strong play out of onballer Jaxon Bennett in the contest.

Tasman has also lost a key player to Kimba with Josh Seal departing but should remain competitive with young gun Billy Haebich set to reach another level after another dominant season by the 21-year-old in 2023.

Wayback, led by superstar onballer Jonty Seal, will be strong yet again in 2024 and Boston should also be more competitive after recruiting South Augusta gun Casey Amos to join playing-coach Brad Keast.

Mallee Park should also see continued improvement from its side this year after finishing just outside of finals in 2023 behind the play of Matt Johncock and Daniel Kartinyeri.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Eagles soar to back-to-back flags

It’s hard to go past Lincoln South for the flag again this season, the club only getting stronger after adding Ben Jarvis to a star-studded line-up which includes playing-coach and former Port Adelaide forward Johann Wagner, SA country superstar Michael Mazey and young gun captain Zane Montgomerie.

Bennett dominates to win Mail Medal

If Marble Range is going to challenge for the premiership again this year, it will need Bennett to dominate again through the midfield after the departure of Jordan Clements.

A tough player who works hard and wins plenty of contested ball, Bennett will undoubtedly poll well in the count if his side wins enough games.

Boston wins six games, pushes for finals

Boston’s first win in 1,406 days feels like an eternity ago now after it racked up five W’s in 2023 but a sixth may be needed this season to challenge for a finals finish.

The Tigers should be an improved outfit with the additions they have made in the off-season and could be set for a strong year.

RIVER MURRAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Jervois 10.13 (73) d Mypolonga 8.16 (64)

Mail Medallist: Alex Stidiford (Coorong)

Leading goalkicker: Josh Scott (Jervois) – 60

Major ins: Cody Szust (Port Adelaide/Lobethal to Rambler), Daniel Menzel (Padthaway to Coorong), James Hargreaves (Yankalilla to Coorong), Nathan Davey (Naracoorte to Mypolonga), Rory Lehmann (Coorong), Rory Taggert (Naracoorte to Mypolonga)

Major outs: Johnny Boras (Imperial to Broadview)

Clubs: Coorong, Imperial, Jervois, Mallee Districts, Mannum, Mypolonga, Rambler, Southern Mallee, Tailem Bend

No one in the River Murray FL could stop Jervois in 2023 as the club stormed to an undefeated premiership season and the Bluds could be set for another sensational year after retaining most of its big guns, including superstar forward Josh Scott.

The club should be strongly challenged by a number of outfits however, with Coorong landing former Geelong and Woodville-West Torrens gun Daniel Menzel as well as former Yankalilla and St Peter’s OC star James Hargreaves.

Rambler should also be competitive after landing former Norwood and Port Adelaide midfielder Cody Szust, while Steve Sumner Sr’s Mypolonga side is poised for an improved season after a shock grand final run behind the play of Jack Kluske, Riley Robinson and Pat Davies, the Tigers adding former AFL player and Naracoorte star Rory Taggert.

The Southern Mallee Suns and star players such as Tom Keough, Rory O’Driscoll and Ben Moroney will also be highly competitive again in 2024 and Imperial is expected to finish in the top five again despite the loss of gun goalkicker Johnny Boras.

Mallee Districts has had a busy pre-season and could be one of the big improvers this year, while Tailem Bend should remain competitive but may just fall short of finals.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Cats claim first flag

Coorong’s list has been bolstered significantly since the club’s RMFL debut last season, and with the Cats also retaining stars like forward Sam Sanders, former Crow Brodie Martin and Mail Medallist Alex Stidiford a premiership push now looks possible.

Jervois will likely be the club’s biggest challenger but the addition of Daniel Menzel as playing-coach should make Coorong incredibly hard for anyone to go up against.

Mail Medal for Menzel

Menzel looms as a game-breaker for his new club and with the ability to play through the middle or up front to great effect he should be able to have a significant impact on every game.

If the former Geelong and Eagles star can lead the Cats up the ladder, he will be a big shout for the league’s best and fairest in 2024.

Josh Scott tonnes up

Superstar Jervois forward spent a lot of time up the ground in season 2023 but the Bluds may look to him to spend more time as a dominant key target this year.

The former Glenelg cult hero topped the league goalkicking yet again last season but could find another level in 2024.

A consistent star of the RMFL, Josh Scott’s ability to play as a key forward and boot bags of goals up front or move up the ground to have an impact makes him one of the competition’s hardest to stop.

RORY TAGGERT

A former AFL player with Melbourne, star forward with Sturt and Mail Medallist with Naracoorte, Taggert should prove to be a major signing for the Tigers.

Can dominate with his marking and finishing ability and his field kicking.

RIVERLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Barmera Monash 5.5 (35) d Renmark 3.8 (26)

Mail Medallist: Dan Woolford (Renmark)

Leading goalkicker: Ryan Proud (Loxton North) – 47

Major ins: Jono Beech (West Adelaide to Barmera Monash), Luke Thomas (Uraidla Districts to Barmera-Monash), Mason Middleton (Encounter Bay to Barmera-Monash), Nick Gillard (Walkerville to Renmark)

Major outs: Chris Knapp (Loxton to Eastern Park)

Clubs: Barmera-Monash, Berri, Loxton, Loxton North, Renmark, Waikerie

Barmera-Monash identified the opportunity to build on its upset grand final win over Renmark last season and has now ensured it can compete into the long term after recruiting former Crows and West Adelaide key forward Jono Beech as well as Uraidla Districts defender Luke Thomas and Encounter Bay big man Mason Middleton.

The Roos now have what it takes to go up against the Rovers on a consistent basis but will still need to be cautious of the threat they pose with players like Dan, Tim and Matt Woolford as well as ruck Zach Gartery and captain Josh Vater.

Loxton North improved drastically last season to finish second in the minor round behind brilliant play from returning stars in Scott Lewis and Joel Woorsfold, while Waikerie should also be in the finals mix again with Stephen Hausler set to captain the club again.

Loxton may struggle to move up the ladder this season after losing midfield standout Chris Knapp to Eastern Park, while Berri will aim for steady improvement under new coach Brenton Woolston.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Redemption for Renmark

Renmark would be bitterly disappointed with its 2023 grand final performance and should come back stronger than ever after the loss.

With a significant amount of premiership experience and a number of SA country stars still in the team this season, the Rovers could be set for an epic grand final redemption arc in 2024.

Beech tonnes up for Roos

A strong and athletic full forward with a booming boot, Jono Beech will make an instant impact for Barmera-Monash up front.

With plenty of quality service coming from the Roos midfield, Beech should get on the end of a number of deliveries and boot multiple bags this season to draw close to the 100-mark.

Vater wins top honour

A superstar leader at Renmark who is among his side’s best in just about every game, Josh Vater could be set for a huge year in the RFL.

If he leads his side to a top spot ahead of finals the gun midfielder will be a major shout for the Mail Medal.

JOSH VATER

Renmark’s playing-coach is the heart and soul of his team and has been at his most effective for the Rovers in recent years.

A courageous player on the ball, Vater accumulates plenty of the footy, distributes with poise and can hit the scoreboard consistently for a mid.

SCOTT LEWIS

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Flagstaff Hill 16.11 (107) d Noarlunga 7.6 (48)

Mail Medallist: Marc Borholm (Reynella)

Leading goalkicker: Sam Jacobs (Flagstaff Hill) – 59

Major ins: D’Arcy Mitchell (Glenunga to Flagstaff Hill), Eduard Vandenberg (Blackwood to Port Noarlunga), Jeramy Cameron-Clay (Prop/Risdon to Happy Valley), Nick Steele (West Adelaide to Port Noarlunga)

Major outs: Hayden Kernahan (Cove to South Adelaide), Jaidan Kappler (Noarlunga to Bordertown), Sam Jacobs (Flagstaff Hill to Woodville-West Torrens), Nathaniel Paredes (Port Noarlunga to Glenelg/NT)

Clubs: Aldinga, Christies Beach, Cove, Flagstaff Hill, Happy Valley, Ironbank-Cherry Gardens, Morphett Vale, Noarlunga, Port Noarlunga, Reynella

Flagstaff Hill claimed its seventh SFL premiership in eight years last season – its third undefeated season in four years – but will be without SA footy superstar Sam Jacobs after the former Crow took over as SANFL coach for the Eagles.

The Falcons have otherwise retained most of their list, along with adding star Glenunga key position player D’Arcy Mitchell.

Noarlunga has retained star players Jake Anderson, Josh Beard, Nick Mott among others but has lost dominant halfback/winger Jaidan Kappler after his move to Bordertown.

2023 Mail Medallist Marc Borholm will run it back with Reynella again this year alongside star midfielder Sam Whitbread as the Wineflies aim to stake a premiership claim, while Happy Valley has acquired Spencer Gulf midfielder Jeramy Cameron-Clay after finishing fourth last season.

Morphett Vale standouts Braydan Hartwig and Robert Schindler-Taylor will return for the Emus this season, while 2023 sixth-spot Port Noarlunga has recruited Eduard Vandenberg and former West Adelaide forward Nick Steele to counter the departure of star player Nathaniel Paredes.

Young gun defender Hayden Kernahan has left Cove for South Adelaide this year and the Cobras may face a battle to move up from the bottom three or four spots, while Aldinga and Christies Beach continue to rebuild.

Ironbank-Cherry Gardens has entered the competition after leaving the Hills FL and will be coached by star local footy veteran Elijah Ware.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Falcons fly to back-to-back flags

Despite losing Jacobs after another undefeated season in 2023, Flagstaff Hill still has the best team on paper in the Southern Football League.

With the addition of Glenunga standout D’Arcy Mitchell, who played a key part in the Rams’ division one grand final run last year, the Falcons should have more than enough talent to compete for yet another premiership.

Milsom’s medal in 2024

A Reynella player has won the last three SFL Mail Medals but new Flagstaff Hill midfielder Reece Milsom could end that run this season.

The former South Adelaide player was dominant after joining the Falcons last season, winning plenty of contested footy and controlling the contest for his side.

With Jacobs gone, Milsom will need to step up and he should poll well as a result.

Cockledivers make finals

Port Noarlunga improved significantly under Andrew Jarman last season to finish sixth after a winless 2022 and should see more progression this year.

Additions of Eduard Vandenberg and Nick Steele should provide a major boost in the guts and up front for the club as it launches its first real finals bid in recent memory.

2. Reynella

3. Noarlunga

A dominant big who can play up front and through the ruck, Borholm was Reynella’s standout player in season 2023.

Improved his production as an all-round asset for the Wineflies after they lost star Cam McGree to Glenelg, damaging opposition with strong aerial ability and tap work and also finishing well in front of goal.

NICK STEELE

(Port Noarlunga)

A strong key forward who takes big marks and often slots important goals, many are tipping Steele for a big season with the Cockledivers.

If he can fire up front, his side will be tough for most opponents to beat.

REECE MILSOM

Has been impressive for the Falcons after arriving from South Adelaide.

A talented midfielder who distributes well by hand or foot, Milsom racks up possessions and sets his teammates up with ease.

SPENCER GULF FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Prop/Risdon 13.12 (90) d Solomontown 8.10 (58)

Mail Medallist: Corey Davey (Solomontown)

Leading goalkicker: Aidan Jacobs (Prop/Risdon) – 69

Major ins: Isaac Ketchen (Victoria to Port), Kyle Colson (Central Whyalla to Central Augusta), Marshall Mieglich (Broughton-Mundoora to Port), Thomas Dickeson (Ardrossan to Port)

Major outs: Casey Amos (South Augusta to Boston), Jeramy Cameron-Clay (Prop/Risdon to Happy Valley)

Clubs: Central Augusta, Port, Prop/Risdon, Solomontown, South Augusta, West Augusta

Prop/Risdon has lost onballer Jeramy Cameron-Clay after winning the 2023 SGFL flag but should still be competitive in finals this season with reliable midfielder Tyler Eckert leading the way, while Solomontown will again be right in the mix after retaining superstar midfield/forward utility Corey Davey.

Port has been the most active club in the competition with player recruitment, bringing in Victorian midfielder Isaac Ketchen and Ardrossan star Tom Dickeson, while Central Augusta should also compete for finals after adding Central Whyalla’s Kyle Colson.

South Augusta captain Darcy Kildea will go around again for the club in 2024 as the Bulldogs aim to improve on their bottom place finish last season, while West Augusta will also be hoping to move into finals.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Davey wins third straight medal

Former Crows SANFL player Corey Davey produced one of the best individual seasons in SGFL history last year, booting over 50 goals while mostly playing as a big-body midfielder.

Should poll well in the medal count again this season with the Cats looking strong.

Cats bounce back

Solomontown has a very strong side again this season and should use last year’s grand final disappointment as motivation to get the job done in 2024.

Port makes grand final

Port will be significantly improved this season after its additions in player recruitment and could make a lot of noise come finals time if it remains fit.

1. Solomontown

2. Prop/Risdon

3. Port

4. Central Augusta

TYLER ECKERT

The focal point of Prop/Risdon’s premiership-winning midfield in 2023.

Eckert is a strong onballer who hits the contest hard and uses the ball efficiently.

WESTERN EYRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Western United 14.22 (106) d West Coast Hawks 4.4 (28)

Mail Medallist: Jake Warmington (Western United)

Leading goalkicker: Jesse Chandler (Western United) – 55

Major ins: Jay Skinner (Ceduna to Thevenard)

Major outs: Harlee Chandler (Western United to Cummins Ramblers)

Clubs: Ceduna, Koonibba, Thevenard, Western United, West Coast Hawks, Wirrulla

WEFL clubs remain relatively unchanged for season 2024 other than reigning premier Western United, which will go the season without country footy young gun Harlee Chandler who has joined the Great Flinders Football League.

Led by Warmington and Jesse Chandler, the club will still be hot favourite and should be challenged by West Coast Hawks, Broadie Chandler’s Ceduna and Dom Denton’s Thevenard side.

Wirrulla and Koonibba may see improvement after a fairly stable pre-season but could struggle to compete for finals.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Denton wins medal

Superstar Thevenard big man Dom Denton was at his best again last season and will need to produce in 2024 if the Magpies want to challenge.

If his side wins enough games, the star leader will be a hot chance for the medal.

Tigers win second straight

Western United will be tough for anyone to stop despite the loss of Harlee Chandler and should perform well in finals after going all the way last season.

Ceduna makes grand final

The Blues came agonisingly close to a grand final appearance last year, losing by a goal to West Coast.

Sam Jonas, Broadie Chandler and the rest of the side should have learned from the experience and will only benefit this year.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Western United

2. Thevenard

3. Ceduna

One of the most versatile players in the competition, Denton can produce high quality performances in almost any role around the ground.

JAKE WARMINGTON

(Western United)

A dominant onballer who accumulates high disposal numbers each week and can also move up the ground to hit the scoreboard.

WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: West Whyalla 10.5 (65) d Central Whyalla 5.13 (43)

Mail Medallist: Kyle Crompton (Roopena)

Leading goalkicker: Scott Collison (Central Whyalla) – 56

Major ins: Liam Dobbs, Riley Framton, Sebastian Framton (North Whyalla to South Whyalla)

Major outs: Kyle Colson (Central Whyalla to Central Augusta), Steve Jackson (Weeroona Bay to Broadview), Will Cowling (North Whyalla to Onkaparinga Valley)

Clubs: Central Whyalla, North Whyalla, Roopena, South Whyalla, Weeroona Bay, West Whyalla

Roopena has retained stars Clayton Mesecke and Kyle Crompton after falling short in finals last season and should be around the mark again in 2024, while Central Whyalla has lost Kyle Colson and may drop off.

South Whyalla has been busy in recruitment after its 2023 wooden spoon but may find the challenge of moving into the finals frame too big, while Weeroona Bay is set to struggle again after losing gun SA Country midfielder Steve Jackson to Broadview.

West Whyalla stars Rian Smoker and Myles McNamara will return this year as the Dragons aim for a second consecutive flag after winning their first since a run of four straight between 2016-2019.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Roos bounce back

Despite a disappointing showing in finals last season, Roopena still boasts one of the most talented lists in the WFL.

With Mesecke and Crompton leading the way, the Roos should be well-prepared to go the distance and claim the 2024 flag.

Smoker claims Mail Medal

Rian Smoker has been a star since returning to West Whyalla and is set for another big year with the Dragons.

If his side can win enough games, the dominant midfielder will poll plenty of medal votes.

Wooden spoon for Weeroona Bay

Weeroona Bay struggled last season, winning just three games, and could be in for an even tougher 2024 after losing standout onballer Steve Jackson to the AdFL.

A strong and athletic player with excellent skills by hand and foot.

RIAN SMOKER

A dominant big-bodied midfielder with the ability to win plenty of the contested footy and deal to teammates efficiently while under pressure.

YORKE PENINSULA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2023 grand final: Kadina 15.4 (94) d Moonta 8.10 (58)

Mail Medallist: Luke Trenorden (Central Yorke)

2023 leading goalkicker: Jake Von Bertouch (Kadina) – 101

Major ins: Finn Betterman (PHOS Camden to CMS Crows), Henry Trenorden (Central Yorke), Josh Koster (Bute)

Major outs: Angus Poole (Kadina to Lockleys), Henry Bruce (Kadina to Langhorne Creek), Jaden Grosser (Ardrossan to Millicent), Jake Von Bertouch (Kadina), Jarrad Redden (Southern Eagles to Woodville-West Torrens), Thomas Dickeson (Ardrossan to Port – Spencer Gulf FL)

Clubs: Ardrossan, Bute, Central Yorke, CMS Crows, Kadina, Moonta, Paskeville, Southern Eagles, Wallaroo

Bute has been the most active YPFL club in recruitment throughout the pre-season, adding over a handful of fresh faces to its line-up including former West Adelaide and Glenelg player Josh Koster, moves which could see the Roosters catapult into finals in 2024.

Kadina saw its major recruitment work of the 2022 pre-season come to fruition in 2023 with Jake Von Bertouch and Angus Poole dominating as the Bloods won a flag and the side should remain strong again this year despite the loss of the two stars.

Southern Eagles have kept star mid Jackson Hooper and should still fair well despite losing Jarrad Redden who has returned to Woodville-West Torrens, but they may find it hard to top league powers Moonta and Kadina.

Central Yorke has picked up former Bute star Henry Trenorden and retained 2023 playing-coach and YPFL Mail Medallist Luke Trenorden, making the outfit one to watch for 2024.

CMS Crows could be without superstar Murphy Short for another chunk of the season while he remains with Port Adelaide in the SANFL but the addition of former Glenelg player Finn Bettermann should help soften the blow.

Ardrossan has lost 2023 best and fairest Jaden Grosser to Millicent and will begin a new chapter under new playing-coach Sam Pfeiffer, while Wallaroo may be set to struggle again this season.

BIG PREDICTIONS

Roosters reach finals

Bute missed the 2023 finals series by four points but look set to go even closer this season after a busy period of recruiting.

The additions of Josh Koster and a number of other local names could be enough to see the Roosters jump to fourth or fifth.

Demons get revenge

Moonta fell short in its grand final effort against Kadina last season but the Demons remain one of the strongest outfits in the YPFL with names like Malcolm Karpany, Ryley Maitland and Tyler Andrews all going around again.

If the side can make it to the big dance this year it will be a major chance of making amends for last season’s defeat.
