FACING Adelaide’s reserves team is currently the toughest assignment in the SANFL.
The Crows are loaded with AFL-listed talent and that has been reflected on the field with wins over West Adelaide and Port Adelaide. For the second consecutive week the Crows have named 20 players on their list and now it is Woodville-West Torrens’ turn to confront the challenge when they meet in Woodville Sunday.
And the Eagles will face the Crows without leading goalkicker Michael Wundke, sidelined for four weeks because of a groin injury.
They are already missing damaging small forward Lachlan McGregor, Scott Lewis and Angus Rowntree, while Jared Petrenko is in doubt.
Godden said his side needed to produce the ultimate team game to succeed, as relying on individual brilliance would fail.
And he has a simple message for his players: “Do not do what we did last week.’’
The Eagles lost by 43 points to South Adelaide in Noarlunga and Godden described the effort as “not Eagles like’’.
“We were soft at the contest, too loose in transition and when we won the footy we were not daring and taking risks,’’ Godden said.
“Most importantly, it is about playing the style we want to, which we did not do last week.’’
The Eagles are using the battle against the Crows to engage with the community and raise awareness of SANFL football.
In a repeat of last year’s successful initiative, the Eagles have taken advantage of the lack of a reserves curtain raiser to host the SANFL Juniors under-8 and under-9 lightning carnival. There are 39 teams involved from 12 clubs, with 63 games played on five ovals.
Almost 5000 fans were at the ground when the carnival proceeded the Eagles edging the Crows in round 17 last year.
