THERE weren’t too many smiles from the two coaches in the aftermath of Woodville-West Torrens’ 12-point victory over North Adelaide in Woodville Sunday.
Eagles coach Michael Godden reflected on the inefficiency of his players as well as some moments of panic.
As for his Roosters counterpart, Josh Carr lamented a poor second quarter which proved extremely costly for the second successive week.
The Roosters won three quarters but conceding six goals in the second term while adding just one behind did the damage.
What satisfied Godden was returning to the winner’s list after two successive defeats. But given his side is still gelling and there are key players missing due to injury, he believes it would be fair to wait until midseason to judge his team.
“North won two quarters last week (against Port Adelaide) so don’t underestimate how they are going,’’ Godden said. “But I was not rapt with the way we played. Our inefficiency, we wasted the ball and panicked in the first quarter, probably panicked late too. Our forward of centre stuff was not good but we have some quality players to come back in.’’
The Eagles opened the scoring with a goal 20 seconds into the contest, only to allow the Roosters to take control on the back of composed work in defence and a hunger for the contest. Jordie McKenzie, Mitch Clisby, Max Thring and Leigh Ryswyk were busy for the Roosters while Callum Wilkie and defender Cameron Craig had an influence.
The Eagles, led by Jared Petrenko and Nick O’Brien, grabbed the momentum in the second term, preventing the Roosters’ defenders the freedom they enjoyed in the first quarter and using the ball with more conviction.
“I’m really disappointed with the lapses in games,’’ Carr said. “It is a group, when under pressure, is still finding its way.
“I’m trying not to let the results get in the road of what we are trying to learn. Look at Hawthorn, they continually win games by less than a goal.
“They’re confident in what they have done over a long period of time. For the first two years when Clarko (Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson) took over they were not a great side but along the way they were learning a lot about the way they want to play.
“That is no different what I am trying to do with this group, there are a lot of things to learn and they will be a lot better for it when we do become a good side.’’
