WOODVILLE-West Torrens celebrated the 10th anniversary of its 2006 premiership triumph over Central District in style with an emphatic 88-point thumping of the Bulldogs in Woodville Sunday.
The Eagles were challenged in the first quarter before taking complete control of the contest, nailing 10 goals in the final quarter to put an exclamation mark on the triumph.
Coming off three weeks free from action, the Eagles have thumped Norwood and the Bulldogs to put rivals on notice they want redemption for last season when they were upset by West Adelaide in the grand final after being hot title favourites.
Not surprisingly, Eagles coach Michael Godden was extremely satisfied with the performance. In contrast, Bulldogs counterpart Roy Laird described the hefty loss as a smack around the head.
“I’m really happy with that effort,’’ Godden said. “The first quarter was a tough contest but then we started to get on top.
“To kick 10 goals in a quarter, we have not done that for a long time so I’m really happy with that.’’
Asked if the effort was as good as it gets from his mob, Godden said it was only half way through the season but he would argue the club was in as good a shape as it needed to be at this time of the year.
“We’ve won six straight now, the Doggies are a good, competitive side, and to do that is really pleasing.’’
The pressure from both sides was superb for the first quarter and the Bulldogs put the heat on the home side to ask plenty of questions.
Jarrod Schiller and Chris Jansen were highly productive for the Bulldogs while Chris Hall, James Boyd and Nick O’Brien were prominent for the Eagles.
The Eagles are a well drilled, discipline unit and they went to work after quarter-time to take the game away with superior ball use and workload. They were much too polished and committed.
“The Eagles quality of ball use was far better than ours,’’ Laird said. “Our pressure was second rate and we could not nail tackles, whereas they forced us into mistakes.
“The last quarter was disappointing. At the moment, we are not near the top sides and we were smacked around the head. We need to respond, we are second rate at the moment.’’
