WOODVILLE-West Torrens’ Paul Stewart has given coach Michael Godden plenty to ponder when he mulls over his line-up to front Central District at Woodville Oval on Sunday.
Best known for his work in defence, Stewart had a rare midfield role in the opening round against West Adelaide at Richmond Oval on Friday and provided the Bloods with plenty of headaches.
Stewart was extremely effective in picking up 36 possessions and nail a goal in the 34-point victory to earn himself the honour of being the first The Advertiser/SANFL Player of the Week for the season.
“It’s been a couple of years since I had a run in the midfield,” Stewart said. “Last year, I was down back all season so it was a good change up, it was refreshing.
“I played a bit through there three years ago at the (Port Adelaide) Magpies as well as down back, I got thrown around a little.
“It’s hard work wherever you play. I do enjoy it down back as well, but we have a few injuries and a few missing at the moment so was in the midfield.
“I’m not sure where I’ll be this weekend.”
Jared Petrenko will miss a month of football due to media commitments, while Scott Lewis was unavailable for the opening round. Their absence opened the door for Stewart to be used on the ball.
Stewart admitted the pre-season didn’t get any easier after reaching 30, and he is glad the games have started.
He did miss a few training sessions in early February when he married Kirra Vince.
“I had a good pre-season and was also busy off the field,” Stewart said. “Late last year and January were hectic, not that I organised too much for the wedding.
“My little daughter (Arlo) is 18 months old so she keeps me busy as well. I like being busy though, and it is a great footy club so it is not a chore to go to training.”
