Eagles show they’ll be finals force, with big win over Tigers

WOODVILLE-West Torrens rubber stamped its premiership credentials as it shot clear at the top of the SANFL ladder with a 70-point thumping of Glenelg on Saturday.
The Eagles were rarely threatened in registering the 18.11 (119) to 7.7 (49) victory — their fifth from as many attempts this season — at Woodville Oval.
A seven-goal-to-two opening quarter set the tone for the hosts, as the Tigers battled to stay in touch in the second and third terms.
Four unanswered final term majors gave the score line a deservedly one-sided look.
“There was a lot of concern coming into this game so to win by that amount proves we did a lot right today,” Godden said.
“We really showed our intent early and the game opened up in the end and the score blew out. When the game was there to be won, the boys really stood firm.”
Lachlan McGregor (four goals) and former Glenelg midfielder Jake Johansen (three) linked up brilliantly for the Eagles, while key forward Michael Wundke booted four majors.
Jake Allmond (35 disposals), Jared Petrenko (32) and James Boyd (31) typified the all-round team display which helped the home side bolt to a 30-point quarter-time lead.
Youngster Johansen booted the first goal of the contest inside the opening 50 seconds before Jack Hayes kicked truly from an angle.
The excellent McGregor grabbed his first major — and the 100th of his career — before Glenelg finally got on the board through Ziggy Vitkunas.
Wundke used his strength to take a great diving mark and convert, and Matt Goldsworthy finished off a slick team move by snapping home in his 150th game.
Two majors in a minute to Johansen and McGregor midway through the third term all but sealed the result.
Bays mentor Matthew Lokan said his side had been well-beaten by a superior side.
“I thought the boys were pretty poor today in all the areas that we base our game around,” he said.
