Hamish Hartlett says his brother Adam’s three-game suspension for pushing a fan is too harsh

PORT Adelaide star Hamish Hartlett has weighed into his brother Adam Hartlett’s three-match suspension over a physical altercation with a fan.

Hamish Hartlett tweeted that the suspension was too harsh and eluded to a precedence set four years earlier when former Woodville-West Torrens player Leigh Treeby had a physical altercation with the same supporter — Sturt cheer squad member Luke Grant.

Treeby was fined $500 by the SANFL and handed a one-match internal suspension by the Eagles.

Treeby was not playing in the match four years ago and became involved in a wrestle with Grant on the hill at Woodville.

He later said the supporter had confronted him.

Meantime, Sturt met with leaders of its cheer squad yesterday and warned them that members of the group would have their memberships cancelled if there’s was a repeat of Saturday’s behaviour at Richmond.

Grant deliberately moved down to within 1m of where Bloods defender Hartlett was retrieving a football and hurled abuse.

According to Hartlett he told him:

“I’m going to bash you Hartlett, you f***en dog.”

Hartlett said he received physical threats from the cheer squad throughout the match and personal insults targeting his family.

Another member of Sturt’s cheer squad was evicted from the ground for aggressively approaching Hartlett on the oval at three-quarter time.

“We told them (the cheer squad) that club is not going to tolerate anyone that brings us into disrepute,’’ Sturt’s chief executive Sue Dewing said.

“They (the squad’s leaders) will be working with their members to reiterate that message …

“I think everyone would agree that banter is fine.

“I think that makes SANFL football fun.

“But there’s no place for foul language and really offensively personal comments.

“We’ve made it very clear to them (the cheer squad) that we will have no hesitation in banning supporters if they continue to test those boundaries.”
