South Adelaide coach Jarrad Wright looked his boys in the eye and went to work getting them pumped for the battle against Adelaide.
His Panthers were just kids and the pre-game words needed to focus on them knowing their role.
Wright mentioned the Crows had a new head coach (Matthew Nicks) so would have a different system, get the connections right in offence.
Most of all, he wanted the boys to be playing good Panthers’ football, plenty of team love.
And when the boys sprang into action, Jarrad knew everything was all right.
Obviously the opening-round game against the Crows at Noarlunga on Saturday was not happening, a victim of the coronavirus outbreak. But he still had his boys Ollie and Finn ready to go.
Maybe the same cannot be said for Sydney coach John Longmire.
After the impressive win over the Crows in Adelaide, he wanted a repeat effort against Essendon.
Twice in his pre-game delivery he noted his boys should be jumping out of their skin at the opportunity.
Unfortunately, his words appeared to fall flat.
