STURT’S Zane Kirkwood has won the 2014 Magarey Medal, polling 29 points.

Joel Cross came second with 20 and Sam Baulderstone and Steven Summerton tied equal third with 15.

Steven Summerton will enter tonight’s Magarey Medal count at Adelaide Oval as one of the favourites but the Port Adelaide veteran is eyeing a different medal.

Summerton, 26, is a rarity in terms of the history of the Port Adelaide Football Club.

A 150-game SANFL player who is yet to win a premiership.

In fact, the midfielder hasn’t played finals since 2008 and has played much of his career in struggling Magpies team.

“Playing some finals and trying to win a premiership is my focus at the moment,’’ Summerton says.

“(To play in a premiership) for Port Adelaide would mean everything to me.”

A local product of the Magpies metropolitan recruiting zone, Summerton has relished playing in a successful Magpies team this season.

The classy on-baller averaged 31 disposals through 10 rounds and finished season the season averaging 28 touches a game.

“It’s definitely been my most consistent year,’’ Summerton says.

“It does help (playing in a good side). You know that if you work hard to get in space to provide an option then nine times out of 10 they’re going to find you with the kick.”

Summerton was also given the honour wearing the famous No. 1 Magpies guernsey after being made captain this year. He says he has relished the responsibility.

The veteran played down his chances of winning the Magarey tonight and believes his old Port Adelaide teammate Zane Kirkwood is the player to beat.

Kirkwood switched to Sturt when the Magpies became an AFL reserves side this season and has enjoyed a brilliant season.
