Former Glenelg and Sturt spearhead Matthew Duldig is the frontrunner to replace Adelaide-bound Adam Kelly as SANFL general manager of football.

Kelly was announced as the Crows head of football on Monday after five years with the SANFL and Duldig, the league’s community football manager since 2015, has been linked to the position.

Duldig is extremely popular with the league’s traditional clubs and will get their backing for the role.

SANFL chief executive Jake Parkinson said the league was extremely proud of Kelly’s success in gaining such a significant role in the Australian football landscape.

“Over the past five years, Adam has had a significant impact at SANFL and on football in SA with his engaging manner, strong work ethic, innovative thinking and passion for the game,” Parkinson said.

“Having led a WAFL club at East Fremantle, performed as CEO of a thoroughbred racing organisation and run his own business, Adam has brought to SANFL a breadth of experience which drove him to challenge traditional thinking where required and, importantly, connect to the many and varied people across football.

“Adam has been a strong advocate for football at all levels in South Australia, including the SANFL clubs and league. During his time with SANFL he has helped to maintain our competition as the best state league of any sport in Australia.”

Duldig played 94 league games for the Tigers, including the 2008 grand final, and kicked 163 goals.

After a season with Angaston in the Barossa, Light and Gawler league when he bagged 73 goals, Duldig made 73 appearances for the Double Blues, kicked 173 goals and twice was the club’s leading goalkicker.

He was the SANFL’s football services manager, before taking on the community football role.
