JOHN Hinge made the tough call to switch allegiance from Glenelg to Sturt at the end of the 2009 season hoping for more opportunities in the midfield.

After making his league debut for the Tigers in 2005, Hinge spent most of his time in defence with the occasional cameo role in the forward line. Then Tigers coach Mark Mickan’s plans did not include an on-ball role for Hinge so he moved to Unley.

While he was settled and had plenty of mates at the Bay, he also wanted to fully explore his football talents and take his game to the next level.

One out of two is not bad. He is still a backman - those midfield opportunities have not eventuated - but his game has thrived, especially after coach Seamus Maloney put the heat on him at the start of the 2013 season.

Hinge is a crucial cog in the Double Blues defence with his ability to read the game and provide strong rebound. And today at Unley his career will reach another milestone when he makes his 150th league appearance - coincidently against the Tigers.

“I’m not big on milestones but it shows you can play a good standard for a while,’’ Hinge said. “I just keep ticking along really and take pride in my performance.

“I enjoy the challenge each week and playing my role. Every game is a challenge and if you are off a little bit then you will get exposed.’’

Hinge has proved a terrific role model for Sturt’s younger brigade, not only with his preparation. Working with the AFL Players’ Association assisting AFL-listed players further themselves outside of football, he also offers advice on off-field issues.

Former Melbourne midfielder Rory Taggert, who had surgery on his wrist and finger, will make his league debut for the Double Blues.
