GLENELG utility Max Proud has had surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone after being injured in an accidental collision against Norwood at The Parade on Friday night.

Proud was forced from the ground in the second quarter and was immediately taken to hospital.

He had the operation yesterday and is expected to miss up to eight weeks of action.

The setback continues a terrible run of injuries for Proud, who had only returned to the league side this round.

“I feel for Max, he is a great club man who busts his guts to play league footy,” Tigers football manager Paul Sandercock said.

“He has had a history of hamstring injuries in recent years — he can’t take a trick.

“Max is a well respected guy at the club and the cards have just not fallen his way.”

The Redlegs continued their development under coach Jarrod Cotton with the hard-earned 31-point victory.

But they could be without lively small forward Simon Phillips for another week because of a minor knee issue.

Phillips damaged the meniscus in the impressive win over Central District before last week’s bye and he was a spectator for the Tigers battle.

A decision has yet to be made on whether he will have a “clean out” or just let it heal, according to Cotton.

Gun recruit Brad McKenzie made his league debut for the Redlegs and Cotton was extremely satisfied with the work of the former Sturt junior, who was recruited from North Melbourne.

“Brad looked like he has been playing with us for 15 years,” Cotton said. “It is hard to find your way in a new group but he looked like he had been out there forever.

“He is an experienced player who sets up play well and makes good decisions.”

Cotton praised the work of former Adelaide midfielder Mitch Grigg in the second half as well as his defensive unit.
