Glenelg too tough for Adelaide in SANFL clash and cruises to 41-point win at the Bay
GLENELG has replaced Adelaide in the top-five with a rousing 41-point win at home led by exciting recruit Dom Barry.
GLENELG has replaced Adelaide in the top-five with a rousing 41-point win at home, led by exciting recruit Dom Barry.
The former Melbourne-listed wingman had 34 disposals and kicked two goals in a best-on-ground performance that may not have always showcased his clean skills but did highlight the run he has injected into the Tigers’ team this season.
Glenelg broke the game open in the second quarter and ran away with it after halftime as 19-year-old Ian Milera, brother of Terry, announced himself at league level with three breathtaking passages of play in the final term — all of which resulted in goals.
The win was built on tackling and winning the inside footy as everyone from ruckman Warrick McGinty down wasn’t afraid to get their hands dirty ... and the Crows couldn’t match it.
Apart from Scott Thompson who battled on all day, Adelaide didn’t have enough contributors around the ball.
Harry Dear played in defence for the third week in a row and Alex Keath went forward in what was just his third game for the season as the Crows continue to develop their list but it didn’t get them the two points on Saturday.
“We knew Adelaide were No. 2 (in the competition) in contested ball and we’re No. 1 so we knew that’s where the game was going to be won,” Glenelg coach Matthew Lokan said.
“After quarter-time we were able to put them under enough pressure to turn the footy over and our guys inside — (Ben) Sawford, (Matt) Snook and (Riley) McFarlane have had 11 tackles each which was very pleasing.”
Adelaide coach Ryan O’Keefe said his team had not had have enough contributors and had failed to stem the flow once Glenelg got a run on after quarter-time.
“I think we took a little step back today, that’s what you’re going to get with a young team and young players but we couldn’t get our hands on the ball really,” O’Keefe said.
“Ladder position is irrelevant to how we want to play, we just didn’t play our process and when we don’t, the result ends up being that.”
Riley Knight provided a rare highlight with three bounces on the wing and a pass to Elliott Himmelberg for a goal in the third quarter but Ian Milera got the immediate reply just before three-quarter-time.
Then when Terry Milera went bang from 40m out on the boundary to start the fourth term it was all over as the Tigers stormed their way into the top five.
