PUT 18 AFL-listed personnel in the Adelaide reserves line-up and it equates to danger for rival SANFL state league clubs.

West Adelaide and Port Adelaide received that message in the opening two rounds and Sunday it was Woodville-West Torrens facing the question of how to handle the Crows outfit laden with so much full-time talent.

The Eagles were brave and at no stage backed away from the challenge. But the superior fitness – and as a by-product composure – of the Crows was evident in the final quarter when they over-ran the home side.

The final margin of 43 points in favour of the Crows failed to reflect the tough struggle for the first three terms when the Eagles trailed by just 13 points.

“After half-time we played a lot better,’” Crows coach Heath Younie said. “Early days they (Eagles) controlled the game.

“We made a few structural changes and were able to play more the way we wanted. We are really happy with the way the players are progressing under the new system. We have a healthy list which promotes competition for spots. The club had a great win in Melbourne (beat Richmond) on Saturday but today these guys put pressure on them again.”

The Eagles used handball and damaging run to build a 21-point lead midway through the second quarter. Luke Jarrad sparked much of the action from defence for the home side while Jared Petrenko was outstanding on the ball.

As the second half lengthened, so too did the Crows’ control of the contest. Cam Ellis-Yolmen was busy, Jonathon Beech and Charlie Cameron were dangerous up forward and Ricky Henderson patrolled the defensive zone with confidence.

Eagles coach Michael Godden said he was proud of his players and how they responded to the poor performance against South Adelaide the previous week.

“I don’t think I have ever said to the playing group I thought we played a good brand of footy and lost by 40-odd points,” Godden said.

“On the back of last week we got a lot right, had the footy a lot and worked hard to help each other out. I’m not unhappy at all – we got beaten by a team which kicks so well.”
