Adelaide and Port Adelaide to meet in SANFL Showdown before their AFL clash

History will be created in next year’s SANFL season when Adelaide and Port Adelaide meet in an SANFL/AFL double header at Adelaide Oval.

SANFL 2019 qualifying final: Adelaide v Port

The Showdown spectacle at Adelaide Oval is to be taken to another level next year when Adelaide and Port Adelaide clash in the SANFL as a curtain raiser to the season’s second AFL clash between the two clubs.

The historic state league battle on June 14, a rare home game for the Crows, was confirmed on Monday when the SANFL released the draw for the 18 rounds and finals series.

And the season will open with a Friday night bang when Glenelg, Norwood and West Adelaide host matches on April 3.

There will be three double headers involving state league games followed by the AFL. As well as the SANFL Showdown, Port will host North Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on May 2, before the Power meets Carlton in the club’s 150th anniversary game.

Former Power defender Jacob Surjan will be in charge against his old club after replacing Port premiership player Josh Carr, who has returned to Fremantle as an assistant.

Roosters chief executive Greg Edwards said the club was grateful for the opportunity and the next step would be to work out the methods for members and fans to be at the game.

“We feel privileged to be playing in the game and hopefully season tickets will gain access,” he said.

South Adelaide has moved its home game against the Crows on July 4 from Noarlunga to Adelaide Oval.

It will be the curtain raiser to the Crows’ AFL game against St Kilda.

Panthers chief executive Neill Sharpe said it was a terrific opportunity to play at Adelaide Oval, although the club was still working with the Crows and SANFL on ticketing for game.

“I’m confident our members and home game members will be getting into the game,” Sharpe said.

“The players and coaching staff will enjoy being at the ground.

“It was our home ground for a long time and any chance to play there is a bonus.”

The SANFL’s state clash against the WAFL will also be a double header with an AFL game at Adelaide Oval, and the contest will follow the game between the Crows and Fremantle.

Glenelg will open its title defence at home against Sturt on April 3, the same night Norwood meets North Adelaide at The Parade and West Adelaide hosts Port Adelaide.

Woodville-West Torrens and Central District will do battle at Woodville Oval the following day and both clubs will have new coaches after Jade Sheedy and Jeff Andrews were appointed at the Eagles and Bulldogs respectively.

As reward for snapping a 33-year premiership drought, the Tigers will host the Anzac Day clash against beaten grand finalist Port at the Bay on April 25.

The SANFL has been a Good Friday football pacesetter and there will be three games on April 10, there are 11 Friday night games, the Eagles will meet the Panthers in Kadina on July 11 and there are as many as 10 men and women 10 double-headers.

The finals have again been programmed for Adelaide Oval with the grand final on September 20.

The 10-round women’s state league season kicks off on February 14.
