POWER RANKINGS

1. Glenelg:

(10-1: Made it a Perfect 10 wins on the trot with a second half demolition of Central at the Bay. First-year coach Darren Reeves has his side humming in top spot and clear premiership favourite after 11 rounds).

2. Adelaide:

(7-4: Suffered a shock loss to an injury-riddled and out of form North at Prospect. Had six more scoring shots but lacked its usual killer punch in a performance coach Michael Godden labelled as “probably our worst game of the season’’).

3. Sturt:

(9-2: After winning their first eight games, the Double Blues have come back to the pack. Still almost certain to secure a coveted top-three spot but they are badly missing injured star midfielder Tom Lewis’s presence).

4. Port Adelaide:

(5-6: After losing their first three games, the Magpies have turned things around to jump into the top five for the first time this season. Beat West despite fielding only 12 AFL-listed players, with top-up man Nick Moore starring).

5. North Adelaide:

(5-6: Ended a shocking run of form with a stunning upset of the Crows to show it is far from a spent force this season. Should regain several key players, including Magarey Medallist Aaron Young, from injury in the next few weeks, which will have rivals looking over their shoulder).

6. Central District:

(5-6: Was tough and competitive early against pacesetter Glenelg before crumbling in the second half. Has improved but is still winless away from home this year, which is an issue).

7. Norwood:

(3-8: This week’s big power rankings riser after upsetting Sturt on the road to win its third consecutive game after losing its first eight. Could it still make the finals? Would be a miracle if it happened but the reigning premier is now close enough if good enough).

8. South Adelaide:

(4-7: The injury-riddled Panthers pulled off a stunning three-goal upset against the Eagles at Woodville Oval in a performance coach Jarrad Wright described as the “most courageous’’ in his 102-game stint as coach. The win was full of merit).

9. Woodville-West Torrens:

(4-7: Fielded a strong team on paper against South but surprisingly offered little after quarter-time. Is defensively okay but is struggling to kick winning scores and needs to quickly rediscover some spark).

10. West Adelaide:

(3-8: Disappointing display against an under-strength Port after what has been an encouraging season. Desperately needs to turn some competitive performances into wins to avoid a fifth straight wooden spoon).

THE STAT

2

Games played by South Adelaide’s Liam Nye against Woodville-West Torrens on Saturday.

He played back-to-back games in the reserves and league after teammate Charlie Duncan was a late withdrawal from the league side after being injured in the warm-up.

FLYING HIGH

Mark of the week

Lachie Hosie (Glenelg)

The Tigers high-flyer and Ken Farmer Medal leader took a trademark screamer late in the final quarter of the game against Central District.

The mark of the year contender was the exclamation point on the Bays’ 10th consecutive win.

The athletic Hosie took another big grab just minutes later, showcasing his aerial prowess.

SAY WHAT

Quotes of the week

“It’s a special win, one of the best I’ve been involved with in my time at the club and the most courageous. We had made seven changes, which included a combined total of only 16 league games, so to win that game, with Charlie Duncan going out just a few minutes before the start, was outstanding. We had a mantra during the week about unconditional effort because we knew we had our backs against the wall, with the amount of changes, and were fighting for our season. I thought the boys gave that unconditional effort for all four quarters against a strong Eagles team, so I was really proud of their effort.’’

South Adelaide coach Jarrad Wright

“Credit to South but our energy was down, we were really reactive, not proactive, from the first bounce, so we got what we deserved. The reality is you have to play the right way and we didn’t play the right way. We didn’t rock up for the contest.’’

Eagles coach Jade Sheedy

“We picked a team based on effort and form and what those players could deliver. I wouldn’t call this a season-defining win but I want to see that consistency now that we have shown what we can do. Plenty of players did nice jobs for us, which was pleasing.’’

North Adelaide coach Jacob Surjan

“That’s probably our worst game of the season. You look at most of the key stats and we probably won but they took more of their chances. After quarter-time we were much better but we need to get better.’’

Adelaide coach Michael Godden

“The players’ belief, no doubt, takes a hit when you’re not getting results. We felt from round 4, 5 onwards that our game was coming back. The whole team synergy and chemistry was still just off, but each week we could feel it getting better.”

Norwood coach Jade Rawlings

“It’s a great result for us, winning 10 games in a row, but we also got a lot of learnings out of this performance against a really competitive Central side, which is a positive. That is based around valuing defence first and foremost, and also contest. Once we got those things right I felt we played some really exhilarating footy with ball in hand.’’

Glenelg coach Darren Reeves

“It (the top five) is something we have been chasing a little bit and this week we get there. It is a nice bit of reward for the way the guys have been playing and how consistent we’ve been.”

Port Adelaide coach Tyson Goldsack

“We were really competitive in the first half and played some really good footy but in the second half fundamentally we were just off a little bit and a class side like Glenelg capitalised. Our challenge is to become more consistent.’’
