SA Football Hall of Fame member and Norwood great Robert Oatey – son of SANFL legend – dies

One of the greats of SA footy, Robert Oatey has died. Oatey – the son of SANFL legend Jack Oatey – made Norwood’s Team of the Century, won a flag at Sturt and worked at the league.

SA Football Hall of Fame member Robert Oatey has died.

He was 77.

Oatey – the son of SANFL legend Jack Oatey – was a Team of the Century member at Norwood and premiership player at Sturt.

He played 232 games and kicked 365 goals for the Redlegs from 1961-73, captained the club from 1968-73, won four best and fairests and led its goalkicking from 1967-69.

Oatey played nine games for SA and finished runner-up to Barrie Robran for the 1968 Magarey Medal.

In 1974, Oatey joined the Double Blues and played in a premiership that year under Jack.

Oatey finished with 69 games and 67 goals with the Double Blues by the time he retired in 1978.

A competition, Norwood and Sturt life member, Oatey later became the Double Blues’ technical and development officer and a coaching co-ordinator and affiliated leagues manager at the SANFL.

He was an inaugural inductee into the SA Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

Six years later, he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his services to Australian football.

He is survived by his wife, Raelee, son David and daughter Petrea.
