Monday Recovery: Norwood’s Matthew Panos has been ruled of the state game in Perth
Norwood midfielder Matthew Panos is out of the state game, beers for South Adelaide, keeping up with Chayce Jones and the Tigers still on the prowl. It was another big weekend of SANFL action.
Local Footy
Don't miss out on the headlines from Local Footy. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Gun Norwood midfielder Matt Panos is out of the state game against the WAFL in Perth on Sunday.
Panos missed the loss to Adelaide at The Parade on Friday night because of the flu. But he has a minor groin issue and has been ruled out of the trip west.
Redlegs’ Tom Forster has escaped serious damage after being flattened in the second quarter. It was initially feared Forster had suffered a broken jaw, but the injury has been diagnosed as concussion and he should be okay for the Redlegs’ next challenge against Woodville-West Torrens on May 18.
Matthew Nunn and Will Abbott are to have scans after being hurt against the Crows. Nunn left the game in the final quarter with a hip problem and Abbott hyper extended his knee.
SLIPPERY JONES
How quick is Crows youngster Chayce Jones? He ran down Dom Barry and that is no easy trick.
Not sure the Crows runner has the same pace as Jones, but Jason Porplyzia looks in good shape. The former West Adelaide star now works with the Crows at West Lakes
FOOTY’S MIXED FORTUNES
The contrast in the rooms after South Adelaide’s win over West Adelaide at Noarlunga Oval on Saturday could not have been more pronounced.
Panthers coach Jarrad Wright called all the players, coaches and support staff into the meeting room for a beer or coke. And the music was blaring.
It was players and coaches only behind closed doors for the Bloods with head coach Gavin Colville ramming home his message.
TIGERS ON THE PROWL
Why shouldn’t there be a heap of optimism at the Bay after the impressive win over the Eagles?
The Tigers have already given their supporters plenty of reasons to be full of hope with highly encouraging form this season.
But they got job done convincingly against the Eagles without leading forward Josh Scott and prized midfield recruit Cory Gregson.
As for the Eagles, they are under the pump after losing their past five games. They have had injury worries, but a lack of pace in the engine room still seems to be an issue.
NEEDING HELP?
Maybe if the Eagles’ fortunes don’t improve they can knock on the door of the SANFL at the end of the season.
Well it worked for Port Adelaide. After finishing ninth last year, Port’s Chris Davies approached the SANFL saying the club was embarrassed and needed help. So they got some more concessions.
Which was intriguing given Port has come within a goal of winning two grand finals since the Magpies became the Power reserves in 2014.
Port beat Central District by 34 points at Alberton Oval on Saturday. Maybe Bulldogs boss Kris Grant, who had his second knee operation in 12 months on Sunday, should talk to the SANFL about getting some help.
And to think Port can take a leading player from a rival club in the mid-season draft, and play them in the state league.
PROUD LEADERSHIP
When Max Proud was announced as Glenelg vice-captain, his family group chat on social media was full of praise and congratulations.
And the pats on the back were well deserved given the tough ride the defender has had with injury.
But three days after his promotion was revealed, his sister Maddy Proud was named captain of Super Netball side NSW Swifts.
And in response on the family chat, Max wrote: “You always have to go one better.”
Maddy was at her best in the big win over the Thunderbirds on Sunday, while Max has been outstanding this season. What price a Swifts-Tigers premiership double?
SLIMMING THE PEST
Double Blues wingman Steven Slimming seems to be establishing himself as a bit of a pest this season. There may not be much of him, but he has been only too happy to invade the personal space of opponents.
And Roosters’ small forward Strato Agorastos didn’t make too many friends among the Double Blues faithful with his antics. Strato has played only a few league games, but he gives the Roosters a spark in attack.

ON THE BANDWAGON
A couple of mates, who just happen to be Glenelg supporters, have already started organising their carpark BBQs for grand final day. No more needs to be said, this is a wagon getting over loaded.
OFF THE BANDWAGON
North Adelaide is playing with plenty of spirit, but the Roosters are still in the negative on the points ladder. The mountain is growing steeper every week.
RANKINGS
1: Adelaide — Now that was impressive. The Crows were down by 33 points in the second quarter against previously unbeaten Norwood at The Parade and came up with an outstanding second half. The AFL-listed blokes are performing, as are the top ups.
2: Glenelg — There were a couple of big names missing from the Tigers and they still smashed the Eagles. It was an emphatic way to snap a 12-game losing streak to the Eagles.
3: Sturt — The Double Blues again showed they are a highly competitive unit and have the systems in place to test any side. They weren’t ultra impressive, but the way they went about their work against the Roosters shows they are on the move.
4: South Adelaide — They were seriously under the pump early against the Bloods and could not get their hands on the ball. There is plenty of resilience in the Panthers and they are able to hang in games. Also had to overcome injury worries.
5: Norwood — The Redlegs were superb in their first half to build a 33-point lead, only to be over run by a highly impressive Crows outfit. They didn’t have Matt Panos and were down to one rotation after half-time.
6: Port Adelaide — The struggling Bulldogs adopted a physical approach, but Port held its ground and then blasted clear with superior fitness (as it should with such a high AFL-listed count).
7: West Adelaide — The Bloods were sensational early and controlled much of the first half. The scores were level at three-quarter time, but putting together four quarters has been a massive issue.
8: Central District — Were a massive underdog at Alberton Oval, but took it to Port for three-quarters, only to be over run by a side in form.
9: North Adelaide — Challenged the Double Blues for the first quarter at Unley Oval before conceding six goals in the second. Playing with spirit, but the loss of a raft of players in the draft is taking its toll.
10: Eagles — Never in the contest after quarter-time at the Bay. A lack of pace is hurting.
