Monday recovery: Glenelg’s Nicholson has surgery on his Achilles, Eagles cross fingers on Hayes, and relief on way for Redlegs

Glenelg’s Carl Nicholson to miss more than a month after surgery, Jack Hayes has scans, Mason Middleton finds some form in the reserves and relief on way for Redlegs. These and more in this week’s Monday Recovery.

TIGER SURGERY

Glenelg will be without Carl Nicholson for at least six weeks after he had surgery to repair his Achilles.

Nicholson was having some issues with his Achilles before being hit by a calf injury. He struggled to overcome the calf problem because the Achilles kept flaring.

So it was decided to have the Achilles cleaned out to give him a chance of returning to the field this season. The Tigers will be without him for about four games, given they also have a couple of byes coming up.

IN A HURRY

The Tigers were far from happy with their second quarter performance when they conceded six goals to South Adelaide and the lead.

So they were obviously in a hurry to rectify the situation, returning to the field 13 minutes into the half-time break. The SANFL rules state teams cannot be back on the field inside 15 minutes.

The Panthers left the chargerooms after 15 minutes and 17 seconds and extended their lead by a point at three-quarter time.

HAYES SCANS

Woodville-West Torrens’ gun forward Jack Hayes will have scans on Monday after hurting his knee in the final 30 seconds of the win over West Adelaide at Woodville Oval on Saturday.

The club is confident there is no serious damage and the scans are more a precaution. He hobbled to the bench, but was walking okay in the club later.

If he is to miss any action, the Eagles believe it will be just the game against Norwood at The Parade on Saturday.

FRIENDLY PUP

Eagles onballer Jared Petrenko is one of the good blokes and he showed why again against West Adelaide at Woodville Oval on Saturday.

Not only did he chat with Channel 7 during the contest, while on the bench, he saved a boundary umpire some work. After kicking a goal late in the game, he chased after the ball and retrieved it for the umpire.

Bloods’ Brett Turner also spoke with the television commentators during the game.

BLOODS NEED MASON

Mason Middleton is too good to be running around in the twos for the Bloods.

He deserved to be sent back to the reserves, no doubt about that given his early season form was disappointing.

But he is a highly talented forward capable of tearing opposition defences apart with his powerful marking. Middleton pulled down six contested marks and finished with 4.3 against the Eagles’ ressies.

With the Bloods struggling, they need the big man living up to his potential in the league side.

LEGS RETURN?

There is an outside chance gun Redlegs midfielder Matt Panos and speedster Ed Smart will face the Eagles in a big game.

Panos is sidelined with a heel problem, but is back running and should return to training this week, and Smart has been missing because of a hamstring injury.

If Smart feels no tightness in the hammy at training on Wednesday he is a chance to take on the Eagles.

The club won’t be taking any risks, though, with a bye the following week.

Matt Nunn will return from a hip injury with half a game in the ressies on Saturday and will be available for league selection after the bye, as well as captain Jace Bode. Will Abbott won’t be back until round 13.

TIME ON FUN

Port kicked 17 goals in its win over the Redlegs at Alberton Oval on Sunday and 10 of those came in time on.

The home side bagged three goals in time on in the first quarter, then two in both the second and third and three in the fourth.

DEBUT FINALLY

It was good to see youngster Mihail Lochowiak make his debut for Sturt against North Adelaide at Prospect Oval on Sunday.

He had been teased a few times, having been named on an extended bench for round 5, 6 and 7. Lochowiak picked up 14 disposals and nailed a goal in the second quarter.

A member of the 2018 state under 18 side, his profile on the Double Blues website lists his worst habit as spending too much time on his phone. You’re 19 Lochy, that is expected these days.

ON THE BANDWAGON

Need to buy a few scarfs this week with a few choices. Okay, so I’m sitting on the fence a little, but the Eagles are finding their mojo, the Panthers toppled the top side and Port showed what it can with those big names in the line-up.

OFF THE BANDWAGON

I’m not going to relinquish my Redlegs membership just yet. There were plenty of reasons for their downfall at Alberton Oval and in horse racing terms, forget they went around.

RANKINGS

1: South Adelaide — I’ve opted for the Panthers because of the issues which have hit the club and the way they went about their work against then top side. It was a gutsy win, although full credit to the Tigers as well because it was a humdinger of a contest.

2: Port Adelaide — it was a big win against Norwood, but the reason Port is not on top is because the manner of the victory was absolutely no surprise given the selection of the two sides.

3: Eagles — they had to withstand a serious challenge from the Bloods in the first quarter, as well as tendency to turn the ball over coming out of defence. There was plenty to like about the win, their fourth on end.

4: Glenelg — the Tigers haven’t a very good record at Noarlunga Oval and this is a game which could have gone either way. They traded blows with the Panthers in a tremendous spectacle.

5: Sturt — had to come from behind at half-time and kept the Roosters scoreless in the third term. The Double Blues haven’t hit top gear, but they got the job done.

6: Adelaide — the Crows have climbed to the top of the ladder with the win at Elizabeth Oval. There was nothing unusual about this result, the talented Crows side got a predictable hefty win against the struggling Bulldogs.

7: North Adelaide — looked good until half-time when they led the Double Blues, only to drop out of the contest with a goalless second half.

8: Norwood — missing a bundle of big names and kept battling away at Alberton Oval. Coughed up six goals in the final quarter which blew the score out.

9: West Adelaide — had more inside 50s than the Eagles at half-time, yet trailed by 32 points. The delivery deep into attack was sloppy, as was some kicking for goal. Should have had a greater lead at quarter-time.

10: Central District — never in the contest against the Crows, although outscored the visitors in the third quarter. Then added just one behind in the final term.
