Glenelg’s star onballer Luke Partington must achieve a feat that has proved beyond any Tigers’ player for 85 years if he is to triumph against Port Adelaide today.
Not since 1934, when the Tigers won their first flag with victory over the Magpies and G. B. “Blue” Johnston claimed the Magarey Medal, has the club earned both in the same season.
Partington joined the greats of the state league when he won the Medal last week in his debut season with the Tigers.
A grand-final victory would be special for the midfielder, given his dad Brian died in a mining accident in Roxby Downs only four years ago, the same year Luke was drafted by West Coast.

“The medal has been a good little distraction,” Partington said at the unveiling of his medal plaque at Adelaide Oval’s Magarey Grove on Saturday.
“I’ve not felt this alive for a long time in terms of playing footy. It’s how I was back when I was 12 – it’s a great feeling.
“The beauty of the Magarey Medal was it was early in the week and then I could focus on preparing for the preliminary final.”
Partington had the close attention of Cam Sutcliffe in the second semi-final and the Magpies’ captain is expected to shadow the Tigers’ star again.
Former Glenelg great Peter Carey and Port champion Greg Anderson will deliver the premiership cup to Adelaide Oval before today’s game.
