LEWIS Johnston has revisited his junior days and thrived in a new role for Norwood this season.

Best known for his work in attack where he earned a reputation for his accuracy in front of goal, Johnston has been moved to the midfield to establish himself as a crucial link player for the Redlegs.

His more prominent job on the field was born from a chat with coach Jarrod Cotton in the summer when they met to discuss the direction of his football.

“It was a chat to see where I was at, and what I was thinking about where I’d like to play,” Johnston, once described by North Adelaide legend Barrie Robran as the best kick he’d seen, said.

“Would the wing be an option?

“We lost a couple of players like (Andrew) Kirwan. I’d played midfielder until I was 15, but once I moved to Adelaide I was pigeon holed as a forward.

“I asked Jarrod if that was something he would consider. That is one of his best attributes, he is open to feedback and is easy to communicate with.

“I was tried in the midfield and it has worked out reasonably well.”

Johnston has averaged more than 27 possessions this season with only Mitch Grigg and Matthew Panos getting their hands to more ball.

And his influence will be vital in the grand final on Sunday against North Adelaide, his home before moving to the Redlegs at the end of the 2015 season.

The former Adelaide Crow has well and truly moved on from his days as a Rooster and labels this season as one of the most enjoyable he has had, winning 15 games increasing the excitement levels.

“The past 24 months have been quite impressive for the club,” Johnston said. “Last year was a good season, but we could not finish off some close games.

“The good form has flowed into this year.”

Johnston said personnel changes and position moves were factors in the Redlegs having a slow start to the season, before going on an incredible 13-game winning streak.

While he knew the side had the talent, he admitted it was always going to take a little time for the formula to kick into gear.

“You can’t just put 18 blokes on the field and expect them to gel,” Johnston said.
