Colquhoun having a ball in Sturt’s midfield, named SANFL player of the week
Sturt’s Sam Colquhoun has relished the chance to get more time on the ball and he continues to rack up big numbers as he earns our SANFL Player of the Week gong.
Sturt ball magnet Sam Colquhoun believes the final three rounds will give the club a clear indication where the club is headed.
The Double Blues face Norwood, Port Adelaide and Glenelg, all at home, to finish their minor round commitments as the seek to protect a crucial top three spot on the ladder.
Coming off four successive wins and victory in nine of their past 11 games, Colquhoun said there was massive belief within the group and plenty of positivity in the direction of the club.
“We are still as hungry as ever and we have put together a strong body of work in the past two months, if not longer, after a slow start,” Colquhoun said.
“Port, the Crows and Glenelg have been playing strong footy and we have been chasing them all year. We are positive in the direction we are heading on the back of the past 10 weeks we have put together.
“We take on Glenelg, Norwood and Port and it will give us a great indication where we are heading and we are excited to tackle that.”
No player has had more of the ball in the league this season than Colquhoun, averaging more than 29 possessions for the 15 rounds after being given more responsibility on the ball.
And he was at his ball-winning best in the impressive win over Woodville-West Torrens at Woodville Oval on Sunday in a performance recognised as The Advertiser/SANFL Player of the Week.
It was appropriate he should shine given it was his 100th league game, having played nine with Central District in 2013 before being drafted by Port Adelaide. He made 16 AFL appearances for the Power, as well as 34 for Port in the SANFL, before being delisted in 2016.
Another former Port player Zane Kirkwood played a key role in getting Colquhoun to Unley Oval in 2017 and he played in the Double Blues’ one-point triumph over Port in the grand final.
“I love it at Sturt and I definitely consider myself a Sturt footballer,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed my three years here and could not regard it any more highly.”
