‘BC’ keeps retirement — and training — at bay on way to 500 games in Whyalla Football League

Brenton ‘BC’ Cabban will cap a big week for Weeroona Bay and chalk up yet another milestone in a senior career which spans 33 years and includes seven premierships when he takes the field for his 500th game in Whyalla on Saturday.

Another week, another jaw-dropping milestone for the Weeroona Bay Tigers in the Whyalla Football League.

Last Saturday, Christian “Gentleman” Hines — playing coach of the B grade — notched up his 400th game for the club, but it hasn’t taken long for reserves stalwart Brenton Cabban to steal his coach’s thunder.

Cabban — affectionately known as “BC” — will take the field this weekend representing Weeroona Bay for the 500th time, chalking up yet another milestone in a senior career which spans 33 years and includes seven premierships as a player and/or coach.

“I feel like it’s a big achievement, but I think it’s more of a big achievement for the football club,” he said.

Cabban attributes his longevity to a strict “player management” regimen, which simply involves not training during the week.

“If I train then I won’t make it. The legs will pack up and I’ll get those soft tissue injuries,” he laughed.

The 49-year-old Steelmaking Electrical Leader “retired” after his 300th game in 2006, however his time away from the club was short-lived

“That didn’t go real well. I was only retired for a week.”

He credits Weeroona Bay’s “family atmosphere” as the primary reason he keeps coming back.

“Everyone feels welcome. Everyone from the best player to the worst player.”

Among all the accolades, Cabban is clearly humbled by the honour of running out on to the field on Saturday accompanied by club legends “Tassie” and “Peaches”.

“Having them two go through the banner with me will be a proud moment,” he said.

Weeroona Bay take on the Roopena Roos this weekend at Memorial Oval in the penultimate round of the home and away season, with both the A grade and reserves already assured a place in the WFL finals.
