THE race for a spot in the division one football finals series will come down to the wire.

Three sides are already destined to feature in the minor round but the two remaining places, fourth and fifth, are any one’s guess.

Goodwood Saints had a shock three-point loss at St Peter’s on Saturday, which has opened the door for the rest of the pack.

Best for the Saints of the Goodwood variety was Anthony Skara on a day his side may look back on as “the” missed opportunity.

This week they are back at home taking on Modbury, which was no match for reigning premier Prince Alfred Old Collegians, going down by 38 points.

Best for the Hawks was Michael Bennett, who continues his rich vein of form.

The Saints need to win or they can kiss their finals aspirations goodbye.

Lachlan McNamara was the star the Old Reds’ aforementioned win.

They have gone from strength to strength and a win over old collegiate rivals St Peter’s Old Collegians will potentially lock in a home qualifying final.

Payneham Norwood Union was outstanding in its 34-point win over Port District.

It was a nine-goal first quarter that did the damage as the Falcons returned to the top five for the first time since round two on the back of a strong last month of football.

Best for the Falcons was Liam Davis’ whilst their barometer Nick Jolly was also unstoppable. They now host Tea Tree Gully, who had a commanding 58point win at home over Salisbury North.

Best for the Gullies was Cameron Sandercock.

PNU must win to stay in the top five and that hunger may get it over the line at home.

Salisbury North has had a season to forget that will see them exit the top flight for the first time in a very long time.

On the weekend they were no match for the Gullies losing by 58 points despite the best efforts of consistent Bradly Hood.

The going gets no easier as they host top team Rostrevor Old Collegians.

ROC had a narrow five-point win over Adelaide Uni with William O’Malley named as the standout performer.

ROC should continue its march to the finals.

Adelaide University host Port District in the final game of the round.

Damian Cunningham again led the way in their defeat at the hands of the ROC.

Port District’s loss to PNU was through no fault of Damian Coulthard.

These two teams would still have September ambitions and this will be a high quality contest that may spell curtains for the loser.
