CHRISTIAN Brothers Old Collegians have booked a showdown with division five minor premier Glenunga for a spot in the grand final after dismantling Lockleys by 52 points at Thebarton Oval in the qualifying final.
The Dolphins were fast starters and caught Lockleys napping, racing out to an early 19-point lead midway through the second term before Lockleys arrested back some momentum ahead of half-time.
The Dolphins made some uncharacteristic mistakes, to which the Demons capitalised on and as a result hit the front late in the third term.
However, Lockleys’ run was short-lived as it would only muster four behinds for the remainder of the contest.
Nine goals to zero in the last stanza ensured CBC will be full of confidence of defeating Glenunga, a side they have failed to beat in 2017.
Jarred McDonald, Matthew Raymond (four goals), Sam Raymond and Matthew Partington, who played another stellar game to be adjudged best-a-field, were outstanding.
Jake Tollenaar booted three vital goals.
Inaccuracy plagued Pooraka at the weekend, however, the Bulls pulled out all the stops when required to end Blackfriars Old Scholars season with a nine-point victory.
Kicking a torrid 11.21 (87) to 11.12 (78) nearly became Pooraka’s undoing, however, winning the contested ball and having a vast majority of the play was enough to secure a date with Lockleys in another do-or-die final this weekend.
Away from home, in front of a parochial Blackfriars home crowd and coming off an insipid defeat to Rosewater in round 18, the Bulls showed grit and character to come away with the win.
Despite those factors, Pooraka would have been confident heading into the clash, knowing its
opponent has a poor finals record.
Blackfriars finals record since claiming the division six grand final in 2014 has been dismal to say the least, since then, the Hounds have failed to win a division five final in five attempts, having been bundled out in straight sets in 2015 and 2016.
Standouts for Pooraka were Frank Timpano, Wade Vandermoer, John Lewis, Stephen Geer and Hayden
Robinson in his best game in Blue and Red after joining from Modbury. After a few lean weeks in front of goal, Michael Baker return to form, kicking a bag of 5 to be one of the most influential players on the ground.
