WITH half a season gone, there have been some high achievers in the Adelaide Footy League’s Nine News Division 5 — and some whose report card is marked “must do better”.
Blackfriars Old Scholars (B)
The Hounds, touted as premiership contenders, have been a touch disappointing in 2017. An emphatic defeat to Glenunga and a shock loss to Pooraka have left the Hounds wanting and struggling to ensure a top three finish.
CBC Old Collegians (A-)
CBC has been the quite achiever thus far, flying under the radar notching up impressive wins along the way. Star performers Jake Tollenaar, Matthew Raymond, Jarred McDonald and Nathan Byrnes have been the keys to the Dolphins’ success as they pursue a long-awaited finals berth.
Glenunga (A)
After a successful off season of recruiting, Glenunga has established itself as the team to beat in Division 5. A team-first mentality has been the Rams’ catalyst to success, with their miserly defence — led by Jayce Del Bello, Kym Edwards and Jack Harford — instrumental in a near-perfect season.
Greenacres (E)
Struggling for depth at the club due to a lack of numbers, Greenacres’ main objective for the second half of the season will be to avoid relegation.
Hope Valley (C-)
Life in Division 5 hasn’t all been smooth sailing for the demons after being demoted from Division 4. Jayke Helmanns has been by far the most influential and valuable player for the Demons, however, has lacked support from a young side still learning their caper at senior football.
Kenilworth (C)
Kenilworth’s season has been filled with promise but hasn’t lived up to expectations. Fancied as one of the leading hopes for the premiership, the Kookaburras are a fair way off the top two sides. Coach Scott Rose has called for consistency among the group, a ploy his side is still trying to master.
Lockleys (A)
Lockleys, along with Glenunga, has been one of the standout teams in 2017. The Demons defeated the Rams by one point in what was possibly the match of the year and have demonstrated their forward prowess by being highest scoring side, complemented in ruck with Hayden Martinello.
Pooraka (B)
After a slow start, Pooraka has emerged as a threat to the top four sides. The Bulls have proven their worth against the likes of Glenunga, Lockleys and CBC Old Collegians and have a good finals record if they can sustain their purple patch of form after the break.
Rosewater (C-)
After a much-maligned 2016 campaign, Rosewater has struggled to cover the losses of key personal over the off-season. The youth policy will hold the Bulldogs in good stead for future years as they have a talented squad of under 18s playing senior football.
Woodville South (C)
Favourite son Timmy Sumner has returned to the Cattery and hopefully will provide the spark that the Cats require to first and for most avoid relegation and have a tilt at claiming a finals spot. The Cats’ best football can match it with the best sides bit their worst can be terrible. Consistency will be a major facet of Woodville South’s game that will need to improve in the remaining nine fixtures
